I keep hearing that 1982 is considered to have had the worst movies of any year in the entire second half of the 20th century. Do you guys know anything about that claim, and why it is apparently so often made?

Well it did have Grease 2, Mazes & Monsters, Halloween 3 and Firefox which I consider to be bad movies, but I am not sure if that beats the average number of annual bad ones or not, I am not quite sure.

These are a same critics that slammed John Carpenter's Thing. Which has now become a classic. Also while at the time Halloween III: SOTW was negatively frowned on, it has found an audience (and arguably better over the Michael Myers sequels/reboots).

1982 is highly considered one of the best years for genre cinema:
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
First Blood
Blade Runner
Tron
The Secret of NIMH
Creepshow
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Poltergeist
Conan the Barbarian
The Dark Crystal
The Last Unicorn
and I could go on.

just bought a couple of 1982 blu rays... DEATH SCREAMS and GIRLS  NITE OUT

think I've possibly seen both of them, not 100% sure, but if they're (a) slashers and (b) early 80s the odds are I'll enjoy them somewhat

I believe THE MUTILATOR (a top 3 slasher imo) was also made in 1982 despite most sources saying 1984 or 1985... there's a shot in the extras on the arrow release of it beeing screened with PIECES when it came out

Ugh.. I'm having a brain fart; there was a Canadian movie about this kid who got lured into D n D in 1982. Its hilariously silly

I wish I could recall the title.

I graduated high school in 1982 and spent the summer at Fort Dix, New Jersey for army basic training. While I was away, "Rocky III" and the song "Eye of the Tiger" were very popular. Also, I missed seeing "The Thing" in the theater that summer. When I got home they had finished building a large cineplex* on the property where they had torn down a drive-in several months earlier. The first movie I saw there was "Friday the 13th, Part 3" in 3-D. Overall, I don't remember it being a particularly bad year but I certainly don't remember it being particularly good, either.

*That cineplex didn't survive COVID and was sadly torn down a few months ago.
