Ok so about two years ago my wife and I put a DVD player down stairs so the kids could watch their movies while my wife and I watch out movies. My mother got my daughter a DVD set of Benji, after a few months the dvds were scratched and unplayable. While cleaning down stairs my daughter found one of the Benji Dvds (she found the original 1974 movie). So my question is because I own a DVD is it ok to download a copy of the movie from the net, or is it still wrong?
Legally, I think it is still wrong, as they removed your "right" to back up digital media in some cases. By downloading a copy of something you technically own isn't the same as making a backup copy, unless it is a legal download of a purchased copy from a cloud account.
If you're yanking it from Youtube and have no plans to set up a distribution group marketing sub-par dupes in Lower Eastern Buttlick in China, I'd say go for it, as long as it doesn't violate your personal ethics.
If you're pulling it from some torrent site, then, personally, I wouldn't as that stuff is being watched. I'm just waiting for the big KA-BOOM! when that blows up in people's faces.
But I'm not a lawyer. And you can buy a set of 3 Benji movies at Amazon for 8 bucks to avoid the legal doubts.
