"Coltrane's Sound" by John Coltrane - love the melting face cover, before anyone had heard of LSD!

Man, that's too "out there" for me!

The other day I'd just listened to it for the maybe the 3rd time since I first bought it over 2 1/2 years ago.  I listened to it through headphones when I first got it and it was tough going, interesting, but tough.  For some reason I was in the mood for it on my drive to work in the morning and it clicked.  I love it even though I still can't imagine listening to it very often.

Speaking of Coltrane (that cover's awesome) and free jazz, I'm still struggling with Interstellar Space.  It's got power, but it wears me down.  I need to pick up some of his earlier work.

wish I had a copy

Atavistic has it for order through their site.  There are various other online retailers selling it, too.  For whatever reason it's not available on Amazon and their third-party sellers have it for rediculous prices.

Anyways, still listening to Machine Gun.  Also:

I heard it once - enough for me!  Early Ornette Coleman and the more accessible stuff from Sun Ra/Art Ensemble of Chicago is about as far as I care to go in that direction.  Albert Ayler hurts my ears.

This, on the other hand, is good fun and recommended to almost anyone:
