It just occurred to me to wonder with a thousand miles of undefended wall out there, why did the Wildlings attack the one spot where all the Night's Watch were gathered? Wouldn't it have been easier to have either unfrozen one of the abandoned gates or climb over and build a lift system or SOMETHING?
