This is one of the best new horror movies I have seen in a long time.
Two thirtysomething yuppies are celeberating their anniversary with a camping trip - until the tent won't go up and they decide to decamp to a hotel. En route, they stop for a girl in distress on the road, only to get carjacked by her and her boyfriend, on the run from the law and headed to Mexico. As the van scoots down the road with the criminals in the backseat and the lead girl driving, they hit an animal in the road and get a flat tire . . . and the weirdness begins.
The tire is filled with sharp little spikes or thorns, and the crook who winds up changing the tire gets poked. His drugged out girlfriend is convinced they have run over her old dog, and she forces the guy hostage, who is working on a PhD in biology, to try and "help" the animal they hit . . . but it, too, is covered with strange spines, and despite the fact that the van has squashed it flatter than a pancake, the spines are moving towards the two humans . . .
They head out, only to discover the spines also punctured the radiator hose. So they pull into a deserted gas station - only to find the attendant half dead in the bathroom, also covered with quivering black spines . . . and as he attacks the hapless party, they hole up in a gas station and try to figure out what it is that is coming after them . . .
Guys, this is one excellent little horror/sci-fi film. Remniscent of THE THING, except instead of the Antarctic, it is set in a remote Oklahoma gas station. I highly recommend it.
Indy sez thumbs up!!
