The New Old Thing: A Free Jazz Anthology - A compilation of various free jazz artists' music from the ESP label, with familiar names like Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, and Sun Ra, but lots of folks I've never heard of.  It's a funky compilation with 2 discs, many tracks edited in order to allow for some variety, but also edited with audio clips from Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. among others relating to opression and empowerment of black people, peace and hostility.  There's a small book that comes with it that kind of explains why this was done, as it's not a critical look at this music, but to "introduce the music in a non-professional way."  An interesting idea, but it disrupts the music for me.

It's interesting how part of Wild Honey sounds like THE KINKS Are The Village Green Preservation Society... both are music that is classic, sounds as great as any of its era, and didn't sell well then:

Wild Honey really is a nice record.  I like these two:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDksmHtklqY
...
I'm amazed I didn't have a copy of Wild Honey back when I had all my "records" (LPs)... I had most of the early albums up to Pet Sounds one of my top fave albums and I particularly loved Summer Days (And Summer Nights) and All Summer Long... (Though, I was buying BEACH BOYS albums in the era when they were deleting tracks...!!  Hatred)  I also bought used.  Their later releases generally were not as interesting for me, though I did like Sunflower (I think) and that other one... I wasn't crazy for 20/20 ("Do It Again") I had Holland and Surf's Up...yeh, that's the one.  I knew the whole Smile fiasco story, and found Smiley Smile a lame follow up for the awesome Pet Sounds...  I knew it was a replacement... but now that I'm finally really listening to Smiley Smile, there's a lot on here that I could love, but every song has these strange tempo changes and discordant uses of silence and softness, off-tune harmonizing, and genuinely annoying lyrics, production is often amateurish... Yet, I keep listening to it... there's so much here and such potential, and so much rubbish...  TeddyR  I'm really intrigued by the supposed fact of a 2011 release of the original Smile tapes, no new recording, all BEACH BOYS singing... all in the wake of Pet Sounds...

I stopped typing to go look at what LPs I saved: BEACH BOYS TODAY!  All Summer Long   Surfer Girl  Summer Days (And Summer Nights) - one of those weird double repackagings renamed California Girls and paired with All Summer Long  Best of the BEACH BOYS Vol.1 and Vol. 2 - Vol. 2 is the first BEACH BOYS LP I ever bought (used) and I still have it! Wink

I bought this used CD to finally get a copy of Wild Honey (I love it, which I 'spected I would.)  I love them late discoveries.   Thumbup TeddyR
