https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9j6WcdU-tsThis movie piqued my interest because of the poster image of a man with his head festooned with electrode wires, and the summary about a scientist discovering proof of an afterlife. This is not a big budget movie, despite starring Robert Redford, it is a thoughtful, cold, and intriguing movie exploring the possibilities of what happens after we pass away, and an uncomfortable love story.
The movie begins with scientist Robert Redford being interviewed on live TV about his discovery of an afterlife, which has prompted scores of people to kill themselves, despite not knowing what the afterlife actually is. The interview ends in an unpleasant way and this is the last time Robert's character is seen in public.
Neurologist Jason Segel meets a morose, sarcastic Rooney Mara on a ferry, where they banter a bit before moving on their own paths. Jason's character is met by his brother, who takes him to an old mansion in the woods where suicide survivors are staying. What follows is a quirky and poignant series of events which follow these four characters.
The reviews on IMDB are not very favourable, mostly talking about miscasting, slowness of pace, and wasted potential of what is a really good premise. But I enjoyed it considerably, enough that I didn't skip by 10 seconds to keep things moving, as I sometimes do if a movie seems to be dragging. I recommend this if you have some time to sit and immerse yourself in a slow moving but thoughtful storyline about death, the afterlife and the choices we make in our lives.
