A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: May 14, 2009, 11:18:20 PM »

It's TREMORS meets LONESOME DOVE in this low budget, creepy horror film set in 1879 in the Dakota territory.  A pioneer family has disappeared, and their neighbors are all dead.  Taken by Indians?  Or something else?

A local rancher joins up with army soldiers to try and rescue the missing family.  But when they capture a young Sioux warrior, he enigmatically blames "the Burrowers" for the disappearances.  Then they find a young woman, buried in the prairie dirt with only the top of her head showing . . . still alive, but unconscious.

After that, things get weird.

This was ALMOST a really good movie.  It just moves way, way too slow.  The entire first half you don't even see the Burrowers, or have any clear idea what they are.  Lots of time spend developing characters you still don't care much about.  But the second half is quite a bit better, and the Burrowers themselves are some pretty freaky looking beasts . . .  and they are NOT CGI!!!  So, if you don't mind slow development, you might give this one a try.  Tomorrow night, it's ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES!

Sounds interesting.  I like new horror movies set in the old west, it's a nice combination.  I've been wanting to check out Dead Birds, about a group of Confederate soldiers hiding out at an abandoned plantation, attacked by supernatural forces.  People say it's quite good.

I've been following this film for months.  Thanks for the heads up on the damn thing finally coming out.

It's also a movie starring Clancy Brown, which makes me want to see it even more.

I enjoyed the Burrowers, but I agree, it was S-L-O-W moving.  That being said, it set a really creepy tone...and I almost nominated this as one of the more depressing movies.  I was hoping something extraordinarily horrific would happen to that f'ing major.....it made me sad.  :(  But, so worth the rent for Clancy Brown and William Mapother.

Dead Birds was really good.  I bought this a long time ago.  Really enjoyed it a lot.

I saw this a few days ago.  It was worth a watch, and had some moments I really liked...  But in the end, I didn't think it quite came together as well as it should have.

6/10.
