I have noticed a disturbing trend recently, and I'm sure some of you have found it as well, but I have noticed that I've been on a bit of a 'Watch movies from my childhood' binge recently.  On top of that, I find that I'm not branching out as much as I should be, but rather, am watching alot of movies I've seen many times before, even though I've got a big pile of DVDs to watch which I keep putting off, and haven't actually seen before.

Is this sort of thing happening to anyone else?  I really should be expanding my viewing, and I have watched something new everynow and then, but I seem to be a bit stagnant in that area of late.

Anyway, here's some of the films I've re-watched recently:

Pretty much every Star Wars related media:  A couple of friends of mine and I have been ploughing through every Star Wars movie, including the excellent cartoon series Clone Wars, and the not so excellent cartoon series Droids and Ewoks [plus the two Ewoks live action movies]

It's been nice revisiting movies I hadn't watched properly in a while [the two Ewoks and Droids cartoons were vague memories from childhood which I wanted to watch] and it's all been alot of fun really.

Flash Gordon [aah aah, he'll save every one of us!]  Fun Sci-fi adventure, full of Bore worms and generally stupid things going on.  Flash annoyed the hell out of me: especially in the scene where he 'plays football' with Ming's guards.  The actor himself is also annoying.  A friend of mine commented that he would be the ultimate Nazi Pin-up boy, and as such he gave me the s**ts for the rest of the movie.

But still it's loads of fun, and was nice to revisit another film I hadn't seen in years.

Robin Williams Live at New York:

Good stand up comedy act.  Robin Williams is a nutter, and it's always fun to hear him swear alot when you consider most of his movies [family fare after all]  Lots of fun.

Orgazmo:

Nice Trey Parker and Matt Stone effort about a Mormon in the porn industry.  I remember a couple of friends of mine at a karaoke party getting really drunk and singing the main theme song from this movie without any music.  That alway is fun.

Anyway I've watched a lot of crap, so I kind of forget where I'm at with my viewings so here's some of my newer 'haven't seen before' viewings:

Rollerball [Chris Klien version]

Plot, what plot?  Character development?  Someone is speaking some crazy language I think.  This movie was stupid.  I thought it was made with almost no effort whatsoever, and Chris Klien isn't exactly a great lead actor.  Even if he was, he would have been facing an uphill battle in trying to give his character any credibility at all.

Anyways, first rule of film: If you are going to do an extreme sports movie, at least make that sport interesting.  Sure there's lots of blood, but really, people riding around on motorbikes and going in circles just wasn't very interesting.

For some reason, the Dean Cain semi rip-off of the original Rollerball, FutureSport is alot more fun for me, since I actually liked it, whereas this one has not alot going for it.  Other than, of course, the very fine Rebecca Romjin-Stamos strutting around [though the whole 'I'm ugly and shy because I have a strategically placed scar over one eye yet am still beautiful' plot point was useless.]

Syriana:

Enjoyed this film about oil in the Middle East, and the different stories of people affected by it.

Sure it kind of makes you hate all big business people, and by extension, American big business and Govt policy [regardless of how true, or untrue this movie actually is], it is still a well made film which I quite enjoyed.  To anyone who has seen it, a friend of mine was telling me about a documentary on the film and how the director got inspiration from something that actually happened to him from the scene where Clooney's character lands in Beiruit and is pulled over at a checkpoint, had his head covered in a black bag and taken away to see some Hezbollah people.

Date Movie:

Went to check out a new cinema in the city [in which one of the screens has bean bags as chairs, but I haven't gone there yet] and saw this piece of trash.  Sure the movie itself is ok, but it's really 'by-the-book' predictable comedy, and it was more fun listening to the couple in front of us saying 'that part's from Sleepless in Seattle. oh now it's You've Got Mail.'

The movie is just a bit of fluff really: there's not a whole lot going for it, and as a comedy it's kind of hit and miss, but really it's too nice to work like the Scary Movie movies worked [they were crap too, but they fired so many dirty jokes at you it kept you pretty interested] so in places it was relatively slow going.  But it may be good for a dvd rent and a quiet, bored night.

Anyways that's all I can think of off the top of my head for now.

My Five Favorite Films of 1995:#1:"Walk the Line".Jaquin Phoenix really brought out the Troubled Heart and Soul of Johnny Cash.Reese Witherspoon was very good as June Carter.#2:"King Kong".More a tribute to Marion C.Cooper than a remake.Great FX.Good Acting.#3:"Wallace and Grommitt:The Curse of the Werrerabbitt".Very funny Claymation Comedy. It was funny enough for both Kids and Adults without trying to talk down to Adults but not trying to talk over the Kids either.#4:"Jarhead".'Full Metal Jacket'for the 21st Century.Shows both the horrors and absurdities of War,but doesn't get too involved in either side of the Political Spectrum.Really great performance by Jamie Foxx.#5:"The 40 Year Old Virgin".On one hand,it's in the vein of Rowdy Comedies like "Animal House";"Bachelor Party";"Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle"and "Super Troopers",yet it's a very sweet Romantic Comedy as well!!Great Performances by Steve Correll and Catherine Keener. My Inbetween Faves. These weren't all that great, but not all that bad either:"Herbie Fully Loaded";"Bewitched";"Kicking and Screaming"and"Monster in Law"."OH MY GOD!!YOU DRANK KENNY!!"."SHUT UP!!"."YOU DID!!YOU DRANK HIS WHOLE BODY!!"."SHUT UP!!".-Kyle,Stan and Cartman:"South Park".

My wife and I rented Orgazmo a few years ago based on Andrew's review.  In the video store, at the counter, the lady kept saying Orgazmo, very loudly: "you'll love Orgazmo.  Orgazmo is really funny.  I laughed out loud while watching Orgazmo.  You'll be glad you rented Orgazmo" etc.

It was, in a way, embarrassing.  We felt like we were renting pr0n in a family video store.

But it *IS* a fun flick.

Flash Gordon?  Is that the one with the soundtrack by Queen?  If so, I remember seeing that at the movies when it first came out.  My best friend, cordially known then as "Termite," walked around for days singing "Flash.....duh duh duh...Ah ahhhh."

Recent viewings of mine:

-Transporter 2: I rented it on VHS, and I liked it. Granted it's not Shakespeare, but it's a fun, brainless movie. I recommend it for Schwarzenegger/Stallone/Bruce Willis fans.

I didn't like that wacko b***h in her underwear (why would a competent assasin lounge around in her underwear?), and there wasa part where the theme from the "Sin City" trailers came up, and I was instantly reminded of that movie.

-The 40 Year Old Virgin: God, that movie f**king sucks. Seve Carell is more pathethic than funny. He is definetly the biggest loser I've ever seen (he plays with action figures, plays videogames and doesn't know what a condom is AT AGE 40!).That guy that looked like Will Ferrell SHOULD HAVE BEEN Will Ferrell, and I didn't dig the totally gay "sensitive" friend.

-Syriana: I was seriously dissapointed by that movie. Every single trailer, review and commentary hyped themovie as a comment against oil companies. Unfortunately, it seems more of a comment on the current Middle Eastern situation, and we already have "Jarhead" and "Fahrenheit 9/11" if we want to see THAT.

I've been rewatching old TV shows from my childhood:
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea -- well written/good acting even when they're saying the most ridiculous lines or ignoring HUGE plot holes -- 3 of us just watched "Village of Guilt"(giant octopus, with some footage from Harryhausen) and some thing on the tropical dinosaurs to be found in the South Pole.  Both episodes ripped off numerous other films without shame, and as such were both wonderful treats.  Damn, but the Seaview is one sliiiccckk submarine!!
Outer Limits -- Moonstone, Demon With the Glass Hand, and Cold Hands, Warm Heart.   Harlan Ellison, who has never been pleased with any of his TV productions, wrote Demon, starring Robert Culp.  Again, you have actors & actresses delivering the most suprcilious nonsense as if it were Samuel Beckett, and as such it is incredibly fun to watch.  Hands/Heart is a little-seen William Shatner vehicle based on the old I Married a Monster From Outer Space theme, with some twists.
All this stuff just holds up brilliantly, and, frankly, is still better than 90 percent of the current fare on commercial television.
I, for one, have had enough of irony & self-awareness in modern horror/sci-fiction television.  I like the occasional joke as well as the next person, but when was the last time you just saw a straight story told with a straight face?  It just ain't done no more . . .

Outerlimits was always a late night indulgence for me when it was on [the new series that is] and it was always good for a tune-out-just-before-bed show [it was on around midnight or so].

Anyways, I've caught a couple more movies and just thought I'd update slightly.

Casanova:

Went to see this for free so that always helps!  It was an entertaining story of the famous lover, Casanova, played by Heath Ledger.  Sure it's just a popcorn flick, and the ending is predictable as all hell, but it was a fun way getting there for the most part.  Oliver Platt was fantastic as the fat fiance of Heath's love interest as well.  Worth a look if you like those sort of 'I'll pretend to be someone else to get her to love me' sort of films, and Casanova goes through at least 2 identity changes.  Probably good to see at home on DVD when you want a relaxing night, since it's not an absolutely fantsatic movie, but I was pretty entertained by it and that's all that matters really.

Indiana Jones: Last Crusade and Raiders of the Lost Ark

Always a fun way to spend a movie night.  Last Crusade is just a well made film, which, to me at least, perfectly played with the actors, and the audiences knowledge of the characters, very well.  Another childhood favourite, and just fun all round really.
