Japanese Nunsploitation, who would have thought it? The Japanese sure have some strange ideas about the Catholic Faith, or as Mr. Spock would have put it: It’s Catholicism, Jim, but not as we know it. They seem to think consecrations are performed in the nude, convents have a Persecution Room, and nuns carry whips as a matter of course (except for rebel nuns, who carry switchblade knives)
You have everything a good sexploitation movie needs: nudity (well, breasts at any rate) humiliation, bondage, whipping, rape, suicide, whipping, cat fights, lesbian sex, whipping, some gore, a nun falling in a bath of acid, incest, did I mention whipping? The whole thing is filmed in cutting edge 70s B-movies art style, with odd camera angles (up to 90° from the vertical), meaningful close up zooms, and sudden switches to still lifes of symbolic details (rather like Vampyros Lesbos).
It has the unique Japanese flair for putting some style in sadism. At one point, the main character is bound with rose branches and whipped with roses (!!). Everything is very beautifully done, with rose petals flying up in slow motion, and spectacular light and shadow effects on pearls of sweat and blood on skin.
If you have a chance to see it, don’t hesitate. One word of caution, it is not exactly women-friendly, so a girlfriend might not like it. Indeed she may start wondering why you are interested in seeing helpless girls being bound and whipped.
