"Empire of the Ants".  American Movie Classic.  There's something wrong with this picture.

I mean, there should be a law, shouldn't there?  EotA should NEVER, EVER be mentioned in the same sentence, nay, the same BREATH as the word Classic.  That can't be stressed enough.

I mean, it's almost like a sickness, isn't it?  If we don't stop it now, who knows how far it'll spread.  One day, we might see "Star Crystal", or "R.O.T.O.R", or, God help us, "Sexette", playing on AMC.  And then it'll be too late!  We''l be doomed, I tell ya!  DOOMED!

(All that aside, I must confess that I have a soft spot for EotA, as well as the other later Gordon Giant Animal Flick, "Food of the Gods."  Neither one of them is any good, and probably toxic for your mental health.  Yes, YOUR mental health.  It's already too late for me...

(Also, have anyone out there read the story EotA is based on?  All I know is that it's an H. G. Wells story and that it deals with a new spieces of ant in South America.  Is it any good?  Does it even have giant ants in it?

(Finally, thanks, Scott, for the heads-up on the movies.  Something to look out for.)

AMC also plays Godzilla movies from time to time, which is kind of weird when you think about it.  Have not read the short story behind "Empire of the Ants" yet.

"The Day the World Ended" is still one of Corman's better science fiction films.  As a child I remember being scared to death when you see the mutant's hand pick up the rabbit.

When I saw EMPIRE OF THE ANTS when I was a kid it scared the Hell out of me. Today, it does not scare me as much as it did when I was a kid, but it does give me chills down my spine. OK, so it's a Bert I. Gordon flick. But, EMPIRE OF THE ANTS is alot more polished than his earlier works (THE CYCLOPS, THE AMAZING COLOSSIAL MAN, etc.). The acting was okay, the effects were pretty good (it's not easy to photographicly enlarge small ants on film to look like huge monsters), the music was average, the photography was great, and the script was so-so (alot of swaering for a PG rated 1977 film).

As for accuracy to H.G. Wells original story, I can't really tell you for I have never read the story.
