Lagomorphs: menace or underutilized resource?

« on: September 04, 2006, 07:32:58 PM »

I just saw Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest this afternoon. Yes, I know it's been out a while, but I don't get to the movies much.

I enjoyed it quite a bit; it is fast-paced, funny, and pleasantly creepy (not scary; just a touch creepy, like a good theme park ride). I thought the CGI on the crew of the Flying Dutchman was a bit heavy handed, but it worked pretty well overall.

I did notice something that I wanted to check with the readers here. I searched briefly through the archives and didn't find any mention, but I may have missed it. Did anyone else see that Davy Jones looks remarkably like Cthulhu? I laughed when I first saw him and said something to my wife, who chuckled. My daughter is clueless about Cthulhu, so she just kind of stared at me a bit.

Maybe it will be out during the holidays on DVD. I might check it out then. My daughter already saw it and loved it.

I saw this the weekend it came out. It was fairly a fairly decent film. IMO the first one was much better.   I believe they have already started or already finished the next one. I cannot remember which on it was I heard.
While I would not spent the cash to watch it in the theaters again, it is deffinatly worth a DVD purchase.

Derf, it's been on other boards talking about the film, Davy defintely reminds people of Cthulhu. Of course, whether that is deliberate or happenstance, I don't know.

The third film in the trilogy has already been shot, as I understand it, as it was filmed simultaneously with this one Frankly, I can't wait until next year. Throw in Yun-Fat Chow and Keith Richards into the mix along with most of the characters from the second film, and it is going to be one wild and crazy ride.

I can't see how it would be completely coincidental. Jones's head appears to resemble an octopus, even up to showing what looks to be the top of an octopus head sticking out from behind hi captain's hat, but there are waaay too many tentacles for an octopus, and they vary in length and thickness. Also, since Davy Jones is supposed to be the fearsome captain of the Flying Dutchman and is supposed to be terrifying to encounter, I'd say the odds are pretty good that some animator is familiar with the dread Lovecraft god and decided to have some fun, officially or not.

Just an update, as of last week, the film has grossed, worldwide, a total boxoffice of over $1 billion. That is an 1 followed by 9 zeros. In the history of films, only two films have grossed more: "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" and "Titanic." I don't think its total, worldwide gross will exceed "Titanic," but there is a chance that its total, worldwide gross will exceed "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King."
