CRY OF BATTLE (1963) - Very good WWII Japanese occupation film starring James MacArthur, Van Heflin, and Rita Moreno. Two culturally isolated Americans trying to survive during hard times in Japanese occupied Philippines. The story has many realistic situations of human conflict and survival. The rest of the cast was all Filipino who speak a lot of Tagalog except one American Captain and a couple of his soldiers. Van Heflin plays a bad guy who has no regard for anyone and MacArthur plays the good guy who wants to do the right thing.  You'll enjoy this film if you like any off the elements mentioned in this post. The film is strong and moves along very well. Eddie Romero produced this film.

Is that the one based on the book by Leon Uris? I went through several Uris novels last years. Didn't like any of them.

Not sure Neville. I don't read novels, but rather I read non-fiction related to Philosophy, Religion, History, Autobiographies, Biographies, and other subjects of interest.

I should read novels. Just could never get into a fictional character talking about anything and the discriptive fluff around fictional characters, but I should read Novels as authors speak through their story telling. Sometimes fiction is more true than non-fiction.  Smile

I agree in which you can learn more of authors through fiction, specially when they are bad writers. They are no that many, but reading their works leaves you with that unconfortable feel you have when you meet an unpleasant person. For me, Leon Uris was one of those.

According to IMDB, not based of the Leon Uris book, which was made into a film in 1955, directed by Raoul Walsh.

This film appears to be based on a novel by Benjamin Appel.
