I've just finished the first twenty episodes of the Ultraman show. It was all good goofy kaiju fun. I sadly missed out on Ultraman when I was kid. Thankfully I at least got Godzilla and Gamera in a steady supply. If you don't know the scoop: The Science Patrol protects Japan from monsters, aliens, and weird disasters (all five members). Hayata, the unsurprisingly best looking male of the team, gains the power to become Ultraman. Therefore he fights everything that comes to harm Japan and saves the Science Patrol's asses whenever they're in over their heads (which is EVERY episode) A lot of neat monster romping with not much character development. I hope other people have this DVD set because I'm putting up my favorite episodes. So y'know we can debate or post your own.

*spoilers* Y'know I could almost call this "My Favorite Monster list"

1) 10. The Mysterious Dinosaur Base. If you're wondering this is the episode where they took an old Godzilla costume, made it orange, added a frill to it and tadaa! A new monster! None the less I think this might be my favorite episode simply for the last few minutes of it. I don't know the fight was pretty good but I think it was that there was quite a bit of drama and a bit more too it than usual. I liked how after Zurass died, Ultraman put the frill he had torn off back on him. It reminded me of what Bruce Lee did at the end of his battle with Chuck Norris. I don't know why, but this episode really touched me.

2)  18. The Brother from Another Planet. This episode is just cool, which is pretty much for the fight. See, this alien comes from another planet. Somehow he deducts that  Hayata is Ultraman. He imprisons him then takes on the identity of Ultraman and begins to destroy the city. Hayate is freed by the Kid of The Series (R) and proceeds to smack Zarab around the city, then they fly off and Ultra continues to bound him! Damn that was awesome! The idea of Ultraman vs. Ultraman was cool, even if it was for a few seconds.

3) 16. The Science Patrol to Outer Space. The Baltan's are back! And Ultraman's gotta take down two! What was neat about that was Ultraman FINALLY showed off some new powers besides his usual karate and Spectrum Ray. It turns out he can teleport, shoot eye lasers, and hurl laser buzz saws! How can I complain? Oh yes and Ide (the comic relief member) gets some pretty good screen time.

4) 8. The Lawless Monster Zone. What more can I ask for? This one's got MORE MONSTERS! A total of five to be exact, though only three are actual giant kaiju. The science patrol go off to an island which is inhabited by monsters of all sorts. Two of them battle leaving one. Oh and get this: The Science Patrol ACTUALLY KILLED ONE! It took them eight episodes but they finally got one all by themselves! Ultraman shows up and pounds the pus out of the last one. It's just fun!

5)  20. Terror on Route 87. There's something I really like about a monster, Hidora, which has a lot of history to it. The monster returns to avenge the death of a child that believed in it. The boy was killed by a truck driver on a certain route. So Hidora does the one thing that makes sense. It goes off and starts destroying every truck on that route. Good logic there. And the monster proved to be very tough too! Causing quite the injuries to Ultraman and even dodging his Spectrum Ray. It's just awesome when Ultraman goes up against a tough one. (Oh yeah and we gotta ignore the fact that Hidora killed off a bunch of innocent people. The Science Patrol did so why can't we?)

6) 19. The Demons Once More. An advanced object is found at a construction site. It contains an odd blue liquid and a message in an unknown language. Both are taken and studied why a second container, which holds a red liquid, is dumped and later struck by lightning. The message is translated too late. The liquids are struck by lightning and now Japan has got two monsters to deal with! One red, one blue. This episode had a nice air of mystery to it and two monster! Good monster romping.

7)  13. Oil S.O.S. VERY little monster fighting in this one. An odd Bat-Starfish kaiju is addicted to oil. It destroy refineries like there was no tomorrow! I like this because Ide (comic relief) got some actual character development. And the monster is rather interesting. It's one where two people are walking side by side in the costume. Nice one.

Okay it's seven.

Final Grade: I'm gonna screw the lack of character development and just go with the fun factor. B+

I loved this show when I was a kid.   I have both volumes 1 and 2 on DVD, but I have only watched 1 episode so far,  It brought back a lot of childhood memories.
