CARS is the only movie on that whole list I've even seen. In recent years, I've taken a small amount of pride in saying that I've NOT seen the Oscar condenders.

I spent 2006 happy with Netfilx and getting caught up on some oldies-but-goodies.  These include BULLITT, THX-1138, DARK STAR, IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA, MISSILE TO THE MOON, etc.  I even watched a couple of lesser known 2006 movies that were quite enjoyable.

The only thing on here that I'm happy for is Pan's Labyrinth. I haven't actually seen the movie yet, but del Toro deserves some recognition. He has done excellent genre work .

The only film nominated for best picture that I've seen is Little Miss Sunshine, and it doesn't deserve that nomination at all.  It's a very good movie, just not great.  I'd like to see the other films but I haven't had the time.

One of the only categories I can weigh in on is best animated, and that should go to Monster House.  It reminded me of goof 80's kids films.  Happy Feet is okay, but has a handful of weak spots, and Cars was the first Pixar film I haven't liked.  Why didn't A Scanner Darkly get nominated?  I haven't seen it but from what I've heard it's quite good.

Best makeup?  How the hell did Click get nominated?!  The only makeup effects I remember were a fat suit and Adam Sandler looking old, neither of which were particularly good.  Pan's Labyrinth needs to win this one for sure.

Pirates of the Caribbean will win visual effects.

I've heard mostly good stuff about "Apocalypto". Surprised it wasn't nominated for more awards. Definitely great to see Del Toro get recognized. Wouldn't be surprised if his film isn't better than all these best film nominees. Is it just me, or have the Oscars gotten less and less relevant? Most of their best film winners the last five-six years seemed at best average to me.

Its not just you.  To me, personally, the Oscars are completely irrelevant.  I just don't care about what others think are 'good movies.'

Let's see, last few Best Picture nominees (winner shown in caps):

2005 -  "CRASH," "Brokeback Mountain," "Capote," "Good Night, and Good Luck," "Munich"  (I haven't seen any of these)
2004 -  "MILLION DOLLAR BABY," "The Aviator," "Finding Neverland," "Ray," "Sideways" (I haven't seen any of these; want to see RAY)
2003 -  "THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING," "Lost In Translation," "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "Mystic River," "Seabiscuit"  (I've seen RotK, MaC, MR and Seabiscuit)
2002 -  "CHICAGO," "Gangs of New York," "The Hours," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," "The Pianist" (slept through most of The Two Towers, not seen the others)
2001 -  "A BEAUTIFUL MIND," "Gosford Park," "In the Bedroom," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "Moulin Rouge" (saw ABM and TLofR, none of the others)
2000 -  "GLADIATOR," "Chocolat," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Erin Brockovich," "Traffic"  (Saw some of GLADIATOR and did see ERIN BROCKOVICH, none of the others)

No doubt there are some good films on the list that I have missed.  But, I have finite time, so choose what I watch based on what interests me at the moment.  Plus, I cannot stand to watch a movie just because it is hyped or everyone is raving about how great it is.  I'm nearly always disappointed when I do that.

Now, with CORPSE GRINDERS, I was pleasantly surprised by a movie funner to sit through than I was led to believe.  It was still painful, though.   Smile

"Lord of the Rings" and "Gladiator" are the only films I'd consider as maybe deserving winners there. I've heard great stuff about "Good Night and Good Luck", "Finding Neverland", "Master and Commander" and I did enjoy "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" although I don't think it deserved Best Picture nomination.

Purely based on the fact that Crash one last year over the much-hyped Brokeback Mountain, do I think there is still hope for the Oscars.  Say what you will about it, Crash is definetly the best 'good film' up for nomination that year, and I was quite surprised to hear so many people being shocked that it won.  Maybe because it was an early release and wasn't fresh in people's 3 second memories...

Anyways, out of all the films listed this year I've only seen Borat, Children of Men, Happy Feet, Superman, Pirates and Pan's Labyrinth.

All great in their own ways.  ]

Anyways, here are some of my tips based on my loose viewing schedule [that is not watching them all]

I skipped some sections because I'm lazy...

Best Picture
I kind of want Little Miss Sunshine to win, but hey, I don't think it will.

Best Director
Martin Scorsese for "The Departed"  - I want Scorsese to win even without having seen it myself, just based on that he deserves one.

Best Animated Feature Film
"Happy Feet"  Go George Miller.  The Director of Mad Max deserves a film for this excellent animation.

Best Foreign Film
"Pan's Labyrinth" (Mexico)  Can't go wrong.  Just a great film.  The others would have to be pure bottled genius to beat this film.

Best Screenplay - Adapted
I really don't want Borat to win [based on the fact that I don't think that as an improv film it should count] but hey it was funny so I'd forgive it.

Best Art Direction
Pan's Labyrinth.  I'm a big fan of this film [so far the best I've seen this year] and even more so based on some of the very haunting sets it had.

Best Cinematography
Children of Men had some incredible cinematography, and I even watched it on a crappy VCD, so that must be even better in reality.  Pan's Labyrinth was also excellent.

Best Film Editing
Children of Men.  It probably won't win, but I haven't seen the others, and Children of Men had some really incredible editing sequences which just flowed so well.

Best Make-Up:
Pan's Labyrinth.  Even without seeing the others, some of the makeup effects in this film were just fantastic.  The only reason why I can imagine them losing is because of maybe [maybe] being aided by visual effects/CGI etc.

Best Musical Score:
Not sure about the rest but Pan's Labyrinth had a great score.  It doesn't sound like a winner, but it was a beautiful mix nonetheless.

Best Short Film (Live-Action)

My vote goes to "The Saviour" based on the fact that it's an Aussie film, and we need all the glory we can get.

Best Visual Effects

I want Superman to win based on the fact that it was filmed in Australia, and I met some of the people involved in some of the physical effects [explosions etc] and those guys are just plain awesome.

But my gut tells me that Pirates will win.

Good listing, Ulthar.  From that, I have seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Master and Commander.  That's it.

Pan's Labyrinth- #65 on IMDb's top 250 list. It goes without saying that PL is a very good movie.
