Thunderball Fists?! I can have such a thing?!

WWW
« on: January 21, 2007, 01:26:06 AM »

According to what I've been reading on the web tonight, Rob Zombie has halted production on the remake of "Halloween." Apparently he's taking some time to work on the script which was just recently reviewed at Ain't It Cool News. (How'd they get a copy?!) This has caused a veritable sh*tstorm as the review sparked a lot of negativity about the film (which isn't even completed yet) and has ultimately led to it being delayed. The Creature Corner and Rob Zombie himself have both blasted Ain't It Cool's "Quint" for the review. You can read their thoughts here and here.

I think Rob Zombie is very talented,(the DEVIL'S REJECTS being one of the BEST movies Iv'e seen in a looong time),and believe if anyone  can do a good job of it,he can.

I've read this as well.

See, I have a lot of faith in Zombie after seeing Devil's Rejects.  I think he could do a great job at making a Halloween film.

However, I did read the review that Quint put up about the script.  If he did actually get a valid copy of the shooting script, and if what he said was true....I couldn't agree with him more about it being a bad idea.

Here are some points from the script:

1.  Michael Myers speaks - quite often.

2.  He has more than one mask.  He has masks that let the viewer know what emotion he's feeling in a given scene.

3.  He was abused as a child, which is what led him to being a murderer - not the fact that he's just pure evil as the original Michael was.

4.  The attack on Haddonfield only takes place in the last 30 minutes or so of the film.

If these things are true, and that was the script that they were using, then I believe that Zombie should go back and do some rewrites.  It completely takes away Michael's powers if you let him have a speaking role and give an explanation as to why he is evil.  I was completely behind this film before the script leak.  Now I have my doubts.

Michael Myers speaking sounds like an awful idea.  He came across as such a monster because he never communicated.

The changing masks reminds me of something you would see in a "Scary Movie" farce of horror films.  I imagine the effect would be like the faces you see on the "Thomas and Friends" kids' show.

I think that showing young Michael with Doctor Loomis is a good idea, expanding on the good doctor's discovery that Michael is not an emotionally disturbed child, he's the emotionless embodiment of evil would be great.
Having Michael Meyers speak and change masks is, to me at least, a ridiculous idea, hope they don't do it.

The mask-changing idea just gave me visions of those Jack-in-the-Box commercials where Jack's facial expression is only altered by a new "head."

All of those ideas listed above sound bad. This is why I cringe at remakes. Somebody always wants to change something.

I have some reservations about this remake myself and Quint brought up some good points, but I'm not making any judgements until the movie is complete and I have seen it. I'm not a very big fan of AICN, in fact I think (know) that they give movies good reviews on a frequent basis in order to get their names on DVD covers and promo materials. That's why I'm taking this particular script review with a grain of salt.

Hey,Karloff himself had reservations about having the Frankenstien monster speak, and BRIDE of FRANKENSTIEN became a classic of horror cinema. Now, before you condemn Rob's vision of Micheal, look at all of the remakes of DRACULA,FRANKENSTIEN,etc...that were great in their own way. What makes Micheal Meyeyers untouchable to differrent interpatations? I think it may be interesting,as the endless sequels were,in the most part, garbage rehashes of the original. We finally got a good director to do something with the dead end series...as Hammer did with the old Universal monsters...let's see what he can do with it,before we condemn him.

Don't like the idea of them tampering with the "Boogeyman". We'll have to wait and see how it plays. I don't see why Rob Zombie doesn't just make his own film about a crazy family who produces a psycho instead using an established horror character to make his story. The studio owns the rights, so they can do what they want I suppose.

Rob Zomibe makes "one" passable film and everyone wants to worship him. You would think that he wouldn't want to make a remake being a fan of cult films himself.

I didn't have a problem with the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and DAWN OF THE DEAD remakes, so maybe this will be ok.

Dosn't really matter to me. If I don't like it I just won't consider it part of the the HALLOWEEN films. Kinda like the American Godzilla film from the 90's. I don't consider that a GODZILLA film just because they use the name Godzilla.

So in the end I'll check out what ever Rob Zombie tries to do with it. Even if it's good you don't have to consider it part of the HALLOWEEN franchise. It might be good on it's own.

i really dug both of zombie's movies.  and i agree that he should just make his own original movie about a psycho...this horror movie remake fever is getting really old.

I just want to say that it bugs me how AICN gets so much inside info on films even though it's a horribly ugly looking site, and Harry Knowles writes atrocious movie reviews (check out his famous one for Blade II...).

I'm not getting my hopes up about this new Halloween, but I'm interested in seeing the final product.

If they're going to rewrite so much of the crucial detail that made Halloween Halloween then why don't they just name it something else instead of riding on Carpenter's coattails?  Maybe they should just use the original title, "The Baby Sitter Murders" if they just want to pay some hommage.

The changing masks thing is odd, but I think I'm going to take some trust in Zombie's choice here.  Michael speaking?  Again, I don't know.. it depends.  I'm sure Zombie won't make him a wisecracking killer or anything.  it all depends.  I think it could work as a background for why he wears the mask.

But I don't want too much background for Michael.  I am opposed to giving him a f***ed up upbringing to explain why he kills.  He just is what he is and we don't know why, and that drives the horror.

i really really really really hope they change those 2 things, other than i have some hope for this flick and i will probably end up enjoying it. i dont mind re-imagining's( i dug the new texas chain) but to change as to have michael talk and wear different masks? no, no, double hell no.
