Where's that brick.......

« on: May 21, 2007, 08:16:23 PM »

I so wish I had a picture to post of this.

Part of my new job involves being the backup driver for our main delivery guy, so I've been training with him for the past 10 days learning the routes and getting used to driving the big truck.

So Saturday, we are stopped to refuel at a truck stop outside Columbia, TN. As I'm waiting for the driver to finish up as the company gas card processes, I see a vision in the corner of my eye.

Walking toward me is a slim yet weathered vision in black clothes and cowboy boots. A trucker who looks like his body was made of beef jerky. But perched atop his head is a straight up Vegas Elvis hairdo. The cresting tidal wave Pompadour flowing into the ducktail turned mullet, and a massive set of grey streaked sideburns. Completing the look the guy even had the ornate gold rimmed sunglasses.

Just strutted right past me and out to his rig, like he was the coolest thing on two legs. I could decide whether to laugh or wonder if I was still asleep in the truck. Finally decided he was real. So that's where the King was all these years, riding the roads and out of his fat period since he's probably hopped up on speed to stay awake for the long hauls, trading groupies for lot lizards. Ladies and Gentlemen, w have our sequel to Bubba-Ho-Tep.

Just wish I had a camera phone, I could have gotten a shot.

I think I saw that guy when I was driving long haul! TeddyR

From one truck driver to another - what do you deliver? What kind of truck do you drive?

My new job is as the receiving clerk/warehouse supervisor for the newspaper I've worked for for way too long. One of my new responsibilities is to be the backup driver in case our primary delivery driver is sick or on vacation.

He/we delivers commercial print work that we do and related materials. The paper makes extra income by contracting print jobs for outside clients: local/regional interest tabloids, Spanish language weekly/biweekly newspapers, those car ad classifieds you see at gas stations, a few classified/penny saver papers, commercial sales ads that we are hired to print, a few college class schedule catalogues, and the odd religious periodical.

Our main truck is a two axle delivery, a big Ryder moving van basically, under 16,000 lbs. IIRC. Nothing like the full size semis that make deliveries of newspaper inserts to us all day long, my real job now deals with those. No CDL needed for me to drive it, but I had to get a physical so I could be cleared to drive it for the company, getting my DOT card they called it.

Today they hired another backup driver and started him learning the routes with the primary, so I'm the number three driver, which was the plan when I took my new job. I'll still have to go out on the road some to get more familiar with handling the truck. I don't hate doing the driving (it's a useful skill to have), but I'm glad I won't have to do it all the time. Driving that thing gave me a new found respect for the real truckers out there on the road.

What about you what do you drive, etc?

I work for a petroluem distributor and deliver bulk oils, lubricants and fuels. I drive a big flatbed onto which I load portable tanks of product, depending on what I need each day. Most of the time it's pretty easy - just pull up to the customer's tank, pull the hose and pump. It's when I have to deliver drums that it gets to be pain...literally. I like the job because it pays really well (that old hazardous materials thing), has good hours and I pretty much don't have to deal with very many people. I get in early, load my truck and get going. I usually have no contact with the office while on my route. At the end of the day I roll in, unload, turn in my paperwork and I'm done. During a nine hour shift I interact with other people a total of about 15 minutes, which is the way I like it. TeddyR

In my time I've driven damn near everything - tankers, doubles, 53' dry vans, flatbeds, intermodal containers out of ports and railroad yards - and delivered everything from food products to shrubs to welding gas cylinders. Driving a big rig is second nature to me now, though I remember how intimidating it was at first.

My uncle Jim has been a truck driver for over 25 years.
He's always trying to get me to try it out.
I think it would be a great way to earn startup capital for my business I want to open.
You know, maybe drive a truck for a couple years...save up a ton of cash.

But I just don't think I could trust myself behind the wheel of a big rig.
I could never forgive myself if I wrecked one and possibly hurt other people.

You see those news stories of a truck that jacknifed and overturned or plowed into a minivan and killed an entire family.
Those are the thoughts that prevent me from even trying it out.

On a side note...
I once asked Jim what the weirdest load of cargo he'd ever carried was.
He told me that he transported a truck full of Trojan condoms complete with the Trojan logo on the side of the trailer.
Now, he mostly transports frozen goods.
Because they're perishable, he makes extra $$.

That's pretty much what I did when saving for my first house. I didn't own a lot at the time, so my parents let me store all my stuff in their garage and park my car on the side of their house. Then I spent the next year driving long haul, where I made it to 44 out of the 48 contiguous states. The only monthly bill I had was the car payment and insurance, so all the money I earned went srtaight into savings.

And Ash, truck drivers are like any others - there are really good ones and really crappy ones. I've seen big rigs fly by me on the freeway doing 70 mph +, and I know that they will never be able to stop safely at that speed if something goes wrong.

Don't forget the silly fools who think that a loaded truck handles like a car, I used to drive a 16' flatbed for a lumber/building materials company and had the you know what scared out of me more than once by someone who cut me off on the freeway or , my own personal favorite, tried to turn inside me when I'm making a right turn.
I once ran over the left frontside and hood of some nut's little convertible, I was sitting at a signal with my turn indicator on, there was just enough room for his little car between the truck and the curb, guess he thought he'd beat me around the corner or some such. He was sitting in the blind spot beside the truck and I guess he missed the light change, the first I knew he was there was feeling the back of the truck riding over his car. All I could see was the front of his car under the tires, I thought I killed someone. Even though the police report indicated that this was his fault, he sued, and the insurance company paid him off rather than go to court.

Thanks for the stories guys. Shadow, we get tankers full of ink at the paper, messy work delivering that from what I've seen.

Ash, if I can start to get a handle on driving my company's delivery truck you could probably learn to drive a semi. We had a guy much older than either of us make a delivery to the newspaper who told us it was his second day of driving on his own. He got his rig backed up to the dock, but he jumped a curb doing it. Then we had to give him major directions to his next stop. Most of the time the drivers only need simple things like how to hit a major highway from town, or which is the best route to some town they haven't been been to before. I wish the guy luck.

I had considered it myself at one time, when I really wanted a job where I didn't have to deal with too many people. I like driving on my own, and recently someone had suggested to me that delivering medical oxygen supplies might be an option - mostly local driving, smaller vehicle, limited interaction. Shadow might know if that kind of driving carries any hazardous materials pay, pressurized oxygen tanks and all. Now I'd rather work at just being better at dealing with people, my new job being one example. I've been a hermit for too long. But if I get better with our truck, at least I know the option is there.

DENNIS, when I was training lately, the words "TURN WIDE!!!" were running through my head at every turn. Had a couple of close calls with some light poles in town when I was coming back to home base.

I knew early on to give myself plenty of stopping room on the highway, plus our truck has an automatic manual transmission, so it drives like an automatic transmission, but the actual shifting, especially when moving from a complete stop or coming to a stop handles like a regular manual transmission. There are push button manual shifting overrides, and and a low gear button as well. This all took major getting used to for me.
