https://variety.com/lists/best-movies-of-all-time/

A good mix of popular blockbusters, classics and art films.

Anyone's list would obviously be different, but these are the most egregious inclusions to me: NATURAL BORN KILLERS (maybe their most controversial choice?), MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO (a good movie, but replace with SPIRITED AWAY, please), BEAU TRAVAIL, MOULIN ROUGE, TITANIC (even though I haven't seen it), and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

I'd add ERASERHEAD, LA DOLCE VITA, THE MALTESE FALCON, TAXI DRIVER, and COME AND SEE instead.

I'm a sucker for these sorts of lists. I remember when AFI did TV specials for a few years in the early '00s listing top romances and comedies and action stars and etc. and I never missed those.

I think I'm in the minority yet again but I actually believe Moulin Rouge was a lot of fun. It's been copied so much, or at least that style has been, that it's lost some punch but at the time the frenetic pace and whimsical tone delighted me. I would probably put it on a top 100 list, though well near the bottom.

I also am not sure Citizen Kane deserves to retain so much admiration in this day and age, though I don't disparage it enough to suggest it doesn't belong around the top thirty or so.

It's a shame Gone with the Wind is slipping do far in the public's eyes, as whatever else may be said of it, I do think it is one of the most impressive films ever, a complete package of performances and visuals and story. It has some of the best characters in all of American fiction.

All this is said IMHO, as I am not that well-versed in films, even after hanging out for fifteen years with a bunch of people who definitely are.

I put on Moulin Rouge for Kristi a while back since she mentioned it was a film she loved. After about maybe half an hour she said "Wow, this has aged badly" and asked me to put it off.

I'll never understand the fascination people have with GOODFELLAS. I thought it was boring trash, the narrative was pretty much random situations patched together, and the characters were all unappealing. The dialog was mostly insults and cooking stuff. Most of the violence is just there for the shock factor, kinda like an exploitation movie of the 70's. I'm surprised it didn't had boobs to show off.

I guess I just fail to see the genius in an insanely long scene of two guys looking for a table in a restaurant.

I somewhat agree that GOODFELLAS is overrated, though still a good movie. The Pesci "am I a clown to you?" scene, however, is one of the best individual scenes ever filmed.

lists like this are subjective, but the lack of Schindler's List immediately invalidates the credibility of this one

I'd add ERASERHEAD and COME AND SEE to any "top... movies of all time" list, full stop!

GOODFELLAS... I'm of an age now where I can appreciate it for what it is, but yeah - extremely overrated in the public consciousness. Does it even crack a list of Scorsese's 10 best films? (I mean films directed by Scorsese - though I'm sure he doesn't list it on his own personal 10 favs list either.) I don't think it does. J/S.

SHCINDLER'S LIST definitely would have made my own list. I think it's a surprising omission.

I love how The Shining is referred to as "insidious of nightmares": it certainly is that  Wink
