alright, I've seen bad movies but this movie is just terrible! This movie is from the 80's and apparently, people's eyes explode like paintballs! It's about some alien thing taking over people's bodies and turning them into something really, REALLY different.

Anyone else see this film? I'm trying to find a scene on youtube

This isn't John Carpenter's 'The Thing' right? Because if that's what you're thinking of you've heard wrong.

Indeed. Carpenter's version is widely regarded as a classic and one of his better films, though of course, personal tastes will vary.

This movie does NOT belong in the "Bad Movies" forum -- suggest it be moved...   That movie is classic!   It's one of the best of the ultra-gory 80's tension-builders.

Indeed, it has been said it may in fact be THE BEST horror movie ever made.

Just watched it again last night, matter of fact.

This has GOT to be a troll.

I don't remember eyeballs exploding like "paintballs" in John Carpenter's THE THING, one of those rare "remakes" that disproves the old addage.  What a great friggin' movie!!!   Twirling Thumbup  Here's where most of Kurt Russell's latter day fans got on board.  Uhm, there aren't that many movies entitled THE THING.  Troll . . .  but may not be aware of it!

"The Thing" by John Carpenter is probably my favorite science fiction/horror film.  However, I understand that not everyone is going to like it as much and that some people will even hate the movie.  However, I am also confused about the exploding eyeballs bit and wonder if you are talking about another movie?  Do you mean the scene when everyone is strapped to the chairs and MacReady is testing their blood and then Palmer starts changing?

I was shocked when I read this post, Shocked I tell you!

I truly love this movie.  The thumping soundtrack still makes me shiver everytime I hear it.

Why, oh why did John Carpenter lose his gift for making scary movies!

There are a bunch of movies with "exploding eyeballs" no?  Like SCANNERS...hmm maybe I'm mistaken?

Yeah...I was a little shocked to see this in the Bad Movies section.  This movie rocks on HD DVD!  hot

EDIT:  But if it's not you bag, that's okay.  My buddy's a big horror movie fan but was turned off by the gore.

Goji Girl-you posted in "movies that you own that no one has heard of" thread, that everyone you know has not hear of this movie you have called the THING. Now...let me get this straight....who are these people "you know"? Are they mongoliods? Do they own TV sets? Are they imaginary? You also state you can't find a clip on youtube...I found LOTS...and quite easily! Now-is THIS the film yer talking about?

(ok...I think Goji Girl is really Wyre Wizard! It's the only logical answer! If I'm wrong...well...I'm wrong!)

Yeah the exploding eyeballs part threw me off, but the second half of the description sounded like The Thing.

Great movie, I love the effects.

You know I don't mind if someone put this here. I mean I pretty muc call the "GOOD" movie board the place where we CAN put stuff like COMEDIES and DRAMAS, while it's perfectly okay to put a movie like 'The Thing' here because it fits the idea of 'bad' movie while it's in fact a good movie.

Whatever.

Also one of my favourite horror films ever, and yes, John Carpenter's masterpiece. I discobered it during the late 80s on TV, and couldn't take my eyes off the screen. The pace is slow, but that's part of its charm. When you finally realise, everybody is a suspect and there are surprises at every corner.

As for the gore, yeah, it's disgusting, but also extrangely realistic. I mean, if someday I see a dog transforming into some space creature, I'm sure it will look very similar to that. Rob Bottin is a genious.

As for the woman who started the thread, I don't think she's a troll. As I said, the film has a very deliberate pace, and that alone will put off a lot of people. And there's the gore level, as you all said. It is rather high, even for today's standards.

John Carpenter + Kurt Russell = one kick ass movie! That includes Escape from L.A.! Say what you want about it, I still think it was awesome. Even the basketball scene, because ball was a big bonding point between Carpenter and Russell when they first met. The Thing has been my one of my top ten movies since I first saw it when I was eleven...from the very back of the living room. I'm a huge John Carpenter fan in general. My father would show me horror movies all the time (much to the chagrin of my mother). He was a huge Carpenter fan, but he never knew it. My favorite movies growing up were/are the aforementioned The Thing, They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, Escape from New York, Prince of Darkness, etc. To my dad they were just good movies or Kurt Russell movies (another one of our shared favorites is Used Cars one of the funniest movies ever filmed). Carpenter's my favorite director with Cronenberg and Henenlotter rounding out the silver and bronze.

If being a John Carpenter doesn't deserve a karma point in this board, nothing else does.  Thumbup
