DEEP RED HATCHET MURDERS (1975) - This Italian Giallo film directed by Dario Argento has about four grusome and creepy scenes, but the rest is just useless fillers. Most noteable are the scene in the country house, the scene with the mechanical doll, and the psycho type ending.

Yeah, but the style,the music by Goblin,and the spectacular murders themselves makes it a must see for Argento fans.I enjoyed   it much more than the over rated SUSPIRIA,which bored me to tears. For me,Argento's best movie was CREEPERS! A chimp with a straight razor as the hero! Pretty far out!

Argento films do have style, but some how I just don't appreciate them. Maybe it's lost in the English translation or poor DVD quality of the $1.00 DVD's. It just might be I don't like Giallo films or most slasher films unless they have some other elements to make it interesting.

I liked this one as well. There is an extended version available (amazingly on budget DVDs as well) which adds the scenes which were cut for the shorter US version; unfortunately the cut scenes are not dubbed, so you have a partly dubbed and partly subtitled movie. It is interesting that quite a few of the cut scenes were humorous scenes which helped to develop the characters of the reporter and composer; it was largely their interaction which each other that made it more likeable, for me, as a film.

I have the widescreen extended version on DVD - - but I didn't get it at a budget price.  I think I paid around $15 for it several years ago.  But it was worth the price.  I also have the following Argento thrillers:

* PHENOMENA (and I also have the cut version called CREEPERS in one of my 50 movie packs)

* CAT O NINE TAILS

His movies always have clever plot twists.  very enjoyable.

When I use to have Netflix I had all those films on my que list. I'll try to get to them all someday.

Didn't care much for SUSPIRA. Guess maybe I'm not a Argento fan, but I'll give the other films a chance.

I have seen BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE several times and it holds a prominent place in my Argento DVD collection.

Just watched this tonight.  It wasn't bad.  I think I've had my fill of giallo flicks for a while, though. 

Still, the bit with the elevator, freakin' classic!

I liked this film, though it seems slightly clunky.  The thing that blows my mind is the serious similarity to Bird With The Crystal Plummage and Blow Up with the whole "I saw something, but no one seems to believe me" thing.

Suspiria has some of Argento's best death sequences, beautifully staged, but Unsane has a zippier savage quality that makes it my favorite.

Sorry if this sounds disjointed -- I just finished watching Manos--Hands Of Fate and I can't seem to focus.

I love this flick. Make sure you check out the Anchor Bay version though, it's got all the missing scenes with subtitles, interviews with Dario, Goblin,....all in all just classic Argento.

I totally agree. This is one of those movies I love to put on as "background noise" while working on some project.
