Okay, so what is a Cabbagism? It's a term I borrow from Phil Ferrand (the guy who wrote all those Nitpicker's Guide books, I believe one of his friends came up with it.) Basically, in a lot of shows, especially those involving science you have a character you explains something to another character and thus, explains it to the audience.
Fine and dandy.
EXCEPT a "cabbagism" occurs when a character is explaining something to another character who should already know what the other character is talking about, that character is playing the "cabbage head" for the audience.
The example is used in an ep of the X-Files where Mulder and Scully are investigating a town of freak, when, among other characters, they comes across a guy suffering from Ichthyosis, also known as alligator skin. Mulder explains explains to Scully what the condition is and how it effects people.
Let me repeat that: Mulder has to explain to Scully (a medical doctor) what Ichthyosis is?
Another example I can think of, in the film Event Horizon, the scientist guy played by Sam Neil gives a lengthy explanation of space-folding to the crew of the Lewis and Clark. Okay, these guys live and work in space, and yet they don't know one of the most basic theories of space travel?
Anyway, there's a couple to start off with, feel free to add some more!
