MIGHTY PEKING MAN (1977)

NO Q.T. had nothing to do with the film, it's just his distribution company.

Quick review - If you haven't seen this movie you need too. It's King Kong takes on Hong Kong with a scantly clap 1970's version of Faye Ray. The special effects are straight out of the 1930's. In a effort to cash in on King Kong (1976) MIGHTY PEKING MAN even makes KK'76 look Oscar worthy.
A expedition takes off to the jungles of India to find the MIGHTY PEKING MAN of legend, after much making it through much danger (kind of) and wild animal attacks (sort of) they make it to the remote area of MIGHTY PEKING MAN. Fearing there is nothing to find and having lost parts of the party the leader turns back, but Johnny forges on finding a the lovely Samantha, the grunting, clean shaven, curled 70's hair, full make-up jungle girl who is from Russia but rearns Engrish rearry fast in the Chinese filmed in India flix. Strangely this poorly dubbed film sports a lot of English in writing, as ini the papers, diaries, and other notes.
The miniature sets are painful obvious, the rear projection which worked in the 1930's    does not fare so well in the 1970's. MIGHTY PEKING MAN is slightly more convincing than the Mighty Gorga, but only by a hair.

WATCH as MIGHTY PEKING MAN stomps small cars and they EXPLODE!
WATCH as MIGHTY PEKING MAN stomps small people and they SCREAM!
WATCH as MIGHTY PEKING MAN saves the scantly clap maiden and she GRUNTS!
WATCH as MIGHTY PEKING MAN takes revenge for his capture and they DIE!
WATCH as MIGHTY PEKING MAN rips Hong Kong apart and terrorize the locals.
What will happen next!!

This film is so bad it's good and really deserves a full attention review. I saw this many, many years ago and grabbed a copy recently in the bargain bin are local story and it was worth every penny I spent. As I forgot just how painfully good it was in a bad way.

If you haven't seen it yet then do, if it's been awhile see it again.

IT'S MIGHTY PEKING MAN!!

I last watched this one a few years ago when the very nice DVD was released (the cover you posted).  It's pretty solid along the lines of some of the effects.  You are doing it a bit of a disservice with saying it is just barely better than "Mighty Gorga."  At least the girl was much better looking than our female lead in some other giant ape movies, like, say - A*P*E*

If memory serves, the acting, though bad, is still heads and tails better in terms of entertainment than a lot of the other giant ape films.  The film is probably a high 3 slimer or low 4 slimer for me, though YMMV.

I have a soft spot for the Mighty Gorga so I might hold it a little higher than others, but you are correct the babe is better and I'd agree it's a high 3 or low 4, but I'd give MG just a tad lower than that.

MPM does have MG beat in most areas expect for the mind altering phase of "Oh Mighty Gorga, we have young maidens for you, Mighty Gorga" ... I hear it in my sleep sometimes.

This movie is horrible.  Unwatchable.  It is anathema to me.  I have never heard a negative opinion on it yet I cannot stretch my mind around how anyone could possibly like it.

I had heard of this movie over the years and was looking forward to watching it, yet I was instantly repulsed practically from the first second.  I don't know why, exactly.  Elements that I would enjoy and have enjoyed in other movies cause me nothing but agony here.  The elephant stampede?  Hilarious, right?  No!  It's like needles in my eyes.  Cheesey toy helicopters?  Funny, huh?  No!  It's like capsaicin injected into my veins.

I hate the Peking Man.  I hate the noise he makes.  I hate Johnny Fang.  I hate the jungle girl.  I hate every character, even the elephants in that one scene.

I hate this movie, and I don't even know why.

While lacking the hatred for it expressed by akiriturbo, I have to say I was shocked . . . shocked!, I say!! . . . to find this one under the "Good Movies" board -- Just shows how warped this site makes us all --

I can't belief these blasphemers! For shame, MIGHTY PEKING MAN is cinematic magic. Why it's up there with WHITE PONGO and KING OF KONG ISLAND (in witch there is no King, no Kong and no island), but be that as it may MIGHTY PEKING MAN is deserving of B Movie honors.
Seriously, really it's not that bad if you watch it in the right mindset. Which is not to expect to much and you are sure not to be disappointed.

Things I've learned from this movie

In the Himalayas, villagers keep siege catapults ready to repel giant apes
Leopards just want to be cuddled
Everything in Hong Kong is highly flammable, if not actually explosive

I bought this DVD a few years, but haven't watched it since then so I don't remember much about it.  You might also want to check out QUEEN KONG.  I have that DVD, too, but I don't think it's available anymore.  Along similar lines, I also bought A*P*E a year ot two ago.  I also have KONGA, KING KONG, SON OF KONG, and MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (and probably a few I'm forgetting).  You gotta love those giant ape movies.

I need to a third viewing, it's a really fun movie.

Though it's not on part with King Kong by far its got its own kind of charm.

Is this the Shaw Brothers movie that also goes under the title Goliathon?  I once had seen a movie on WNEW 5's Drive In Movie by the same name and the woman in the picture looks familiar.  If I remember right, it was Inframan star Lee-Hsu-Hsien who also starred in the film. This, if I remember right.

You are correct!

Very cool!  The Shaws weren't afraid to step out of their traditions now and then.  I remember this movie well.  I wonder how they would have handled Frankenstein?

Another Shaw film, (though off topic) that I found a few days ago was called Seven Man Army.   It was the Shaws' take on the Sino-Japanese war of the mid 1930's, and a 7 man Chinese resistance ( headed by Ti-Lung and David Chiang) who keep kicking their asses at every turn.  Not a bad movie from what I've seen of it at Youtube.
