I've recently been toying with the idea that I think physical pain is completely incongruous with the theory of evolution. ... For pain to have been a mutation passed on genetically and amplifying over countless generations as a detriment to an individual but a boon to species continuation seems exceedingly implausible given the parameters of evolutionary hypothesis.

I don't really follow that argument because pain isn't a detriment to the individual, it's a boon. Organisms that didn't feel pain would walk into volcanoes and die because there were no signals telling them to stay out of danger. Individuals without a pain response would die more frequently and wouldn't be in any position to pass on their genes.

A slightly bigger mystery to me is why we have endorphins, natural chemicals that combat pain. There's not as much utility to the individual to not feel pain, or at least the circumstances in which it would be beneficial are more remote. Still, I see situations where it would be valuable to the organism: if you're being chomped on by a predator and you need to fight back, being paralyzed by pain isn't an option.

Well pain is just kind of an aspect of the sense of touch, isn't it?  It's been around for millions of years before us humans came on the scene.  If an animal is walking through the woods and touches something, it needs to be able to differentiate between lightly brushing against a bush vs. walking straight into an immovable object.  It just makes sense that the sensation grows stronger and stronger depending on the amount of force applied.  "Pain" is just kind of the upper threshold of that sensation.  What constitutes pain and what constitutes a strong sensation varies by individual, so it's not like there's even a clear dividing line there.

I grew up on Bugs Bunny dressed in drag doing a strip tease for Elmer Fudd, then taking his gun and shooting him in the face leaving him looking like a minstrel caricature.

Yeah I noticed during the one where the opera singer guy gets hypnotized that when the evil conductor drops one of those things on his head they took that out.  an anvil.  It's the one where he starts singing "a tisket a tasket I dropped my little basket" and "oh muh darlin oh muh darlin" in the middle of the opera

A shame we live in an age of such bad poetry the entire art form is held to be corrupted.

Once upon a time poetry meant something:

None would live past years again,
Yet all hope pleasure in what yet remain;
And from the dregs of life think to receive
What the first sprightly running could not give.

---John Dryden

See, poems often used to be good...

Why would somebody suck on a chili dog? Assuming there isn't anything kinky going on, I can think of a few verbs to describe eating a chili dog, but "suck" is not one of them. It wouldn't even work; you'd just make the chili dog all soggy and gross.

Nothing gets the minds of a selfish society off a natural disaster faster than news of a new Star Wars movie.
