Well the Iain is for Iain McDiarmid (Star Wars), the Alexander is for me, Malcolm is for Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly) and Ash is for Ash Williams (Evil Dead) thus covering most of our favourite fandoms. We would have tried to add something from The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter but Kristi felt the name was too long already.

Just got back from the Alice Cooper gig. Me and Stewart hit Glasgow in the early afternoon and met up with Concerts Dave a bit after three. By that time we were on about our ninth alcoholic beverage so he had quite some catching up to do. We hit the SECC just before the concert was due to start and freaked out about the price of the booze there, then decided not to get any more drinks. The first band (The Tubes) have won the covetted 'Worst Band I Have Ever Heard Live' award beating both Group Dogdrill and D.A.D. into a firm equal second place. Apparantly my posts on FB were highly amusing to other people when I was begging for god, muhammad, buddah or any deity to distract me from the pain I was hearing by ripping my testicles off. It really was that bad. Hell, I've been getting shot at, bombed and mortered and never prayed to any god to save me (thus disproving the common saying in the military that there are no athiests on the firing line), but make me listen to them again and I'll worship anyone who can save me.

Anyway, eventually they did stop playing and The Mission came on who were awesome, followed by Alice Cooper who was even better.  Some cute girl was there with her dad. She made it very clear that she was very interested in my recently married brother and her dad made it clear he would approve of Stewart. I thought it was slightly odd when she took her top off to flash at Alice, with her dad standing beside her. While she did have nice breasts and a cute bra I am glad Stewart wasn't responding to her requests to go home with her, although when the band was doing Only Women Bleed I did get down on one knee and serenade the father to try and distract them from Stewart who really wasn't enjoying topless cute girls attention. Still its better than the gig where some girl who had really thick lip stick on (imagine putting it around your mouth clown style) who managed to work her way to the front of the crowd in the mosh pit and for some reason started attacking me. I've seen her at a few gigs after that and never let her anywhere near me (I ended up having to elbow her in the face to stop her punching me, to this day I have no idea why she attacked me, I've always figured she was on something, or maybe someone else grabbed her bum and she thought it was me, yeah just try getting your arms down in a mosh pit to cop a feel of someone else. Anyone who has ever been in one will know just how impossible that would be) no matter how much she begs to be let into the front row. The lip stick makes her easy to recognise even fifteen years later.

Anyway, we missed the last train home and had to get a taxi back home. Been a while since my throat has been this raw from singing at a gig. Overall it was a good night.

Except for The Tubes. They were effing terrible.

Oh, I should proberly mention that when Concerts Dave walked into the bar I leapt out of my seat and ran over to him (no mean feat in a crowded pub while yelling "Brother Numptie!!!" I jumped up on him (Dave is good foot taller than I am) which dragged him down to the floor. I also went around the table next to our one and compared how erect each mans nipples were. This was me when I was sober, but I do tend to get a bit hyper at concerts.

In Saudi Arabia I could do a lot of prison time for things like that.

Anyway, heading home now feeling a little bit shattered. I fell asleep easily enough last night but woke up after an hour or two. I can survive no problem on four hours sleep a night for years, but give me a few minutes less than that and I am fit for the knacker's yard (place where they send old horses to boil down into glue).

I was walking through Glasgow since I had a couple of hours to kill and saw some really bad movies I wanted to buy. However my funds at this point were limited and I was very well aware that if I bought them (especially one called Massacre In Dinosaur Valley) I would have to spend two hours walking home in bad weather once I got to Elgin, instead of taking a taxi for the last stage of the journey.

Choices, choices, choices.

So after letting Kristi know that I'd be around two hours later than expected getting home I headed up to the train station. I badly need a bath an a shave and my hands are covered in cuts from Dagon. I am wearing an old Iron Maiden tee shirt and my leather bikers jacket.

This normally ensures that I get peace and quiet on a trip and people leave me alone.

Random insert. How come animal rights people will quite happily throw paint over a woman wearing fur but will not do the same to someone who looks like a Hell's Angel wearing leather? Not that I am a particular fan of the fur trade or anything. I think other animals have as much right to a good life before being eaten and skinned as we do.

What do you mean you don't eat and skin people? Or do you mean you do it the other way round first? Now I understand.

Got the pictures from my brothers wedding. Other than the grey kilts he made us wear I think they look good. Luckily the train we are on goes all the way from Glasgow to Elgin via Abberdeen and I don't have to change at Aberdeen train station which I am firmly convinved is the coldest place on earth. If there is a hell then Aberdeen train station is the furthest point in the universe from its heat.

Going through Stirling just now. I can see the Wallace Monument on my left, but it is very overcast and misty outside so can't see much more. If all goes according to plan I will be home in 4 or 5 hours, and if I have to walk from the train station, well that becomes 6 to 7 hours instead.

I have not heard of a plan being hijacked with demands to take it someone else for quite a few years now. Seemed to happen a lot while I was a kid. What I didn't understand was why the hijackers just didn't book a flight on a plane going to where they wanted to be instead? And why did they generally want to be taken to really crappy countries that no one in their right mind would want to visit? Besides I am on a train and taking it over with demands to be taken to Cuba or wherever tend not to work so well on them.

At least this week in work will be a short one, although I have long considered that work on a Monday should start at lunch time to ease you into the working week and remove the feeling of dread people feel on a Sunday night about work the next day, after all if you get a long lie in suddenly Monday isn't such a bad day. The working week should then end on a Friday at lunchtime, allowing people to start their weekend early.

Anyway, that is today's random musings over with.

For the moment.

Today in class one of my seniors walked up to me and said:
"Since we have five students out why not just watch funny YouTube videos for the whole period instead of  you teaching?"
I replied:  "I would love to grant your request, but that might set in motion a chain of events that would cause a future visionary leader not to be born.  Seriously, it would be like stabbing Abraham Lincoln in his cradle!"

He paused a moment, then said, "Well, I can tell you thought this out more than I did.  Never mind!"

Since Dagon has been missing me while I was away I've been paying him extra attention. Let him come down to the utility room with me while I completed the daily ritual of ironing my uniform for the day ahead (Standard working dress, unform dress code 2B (short sleeved shirt). This turned out to be a mistake as Dagon took the moving cloth while I was ironing as something to be leapt on with all claws out. Don't feel like work today, really just want to climb back into bed where it is nice and warm.

Was planning a trip next year to London. I figured I'd book tickets for Wicked and take Kristi to see it. I planned out a week's worth of events and things she would love to do there, but then a sudden thought struck me. What the hell are we going to do with the baby during all of this? Oh well I guess it will be a few more years before I can put that plan into action.

Oh well, off to work I go. Have a good day everyone.

Saw a funeral notice for Ronald Smyth yesterday. I would be surprised if anyone out there has heard of him. For most of his life, when you compare it to the lives of others out there it was a pretty unremarkable one. He never created any lasting works of art, or invent something world shaking so why take notice of his death.

Well for a few years Mr Smyth did something very remarkable indeed (although he was by no means the only one who did this). At a time when most of Europe had been conquered and the British Empire stood alone against Fascism, Mr Smyth volunteered to go fight against them. He joined the RAF as a pilot and joined the war effort just as the Battle of Britain got underway. He risked his life defending the skies over the south coast and after that battle was won he was given a safer posting training up new pilots, however he then volunteered to go back to a sqn and ending up flying reconnaissance in a Spitfire. He once told the story of the time he felt he had come closest to death. Reccy missions were flown solo and and he was on a mission he came across a flight of USAF bombers with its fighter escort. They mistook his Spitfire for a German aircraft and attacked. He managed to outfly the escort though and got back safely.

For his efforts Flt Lt Smyth was awarded a DSO.

He lived to the ripe old age of 96, but the reason I've taken particular notice was Flt Lt Smyth was the last surviving pilot from the Battle Of Britain.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Thank you for posting that, Alex. It hits with a shock that he was the last. They're all gone now? To this day a lot is owed to those pilots and many others from that era.

I remember hearing a Battle of Britain pilot speaking about how he was never afraid in the air. Back on the ground, after a mission, he would tremble sometimes and be sick. When contemplating the next time he'd go up, he'd be terrified. But oddly, he said in the air, he was never afraid.

Such brave people.

Kinda bugged me that I was seeing loads of headlines for the death of some rapper I had never heard of before who had overdosed and nothing for this guy, so I thought I'd do something as small as it may be about it.

Wow . . . the last of the Battle of Britain pilots is gone?
I'm actually going to be teaching that unit tonight.  I'll remind my class that we are losing the Greatest Generation.
Time keeps on slipping into the future, as the old song says.  I interviewed a number of World War One veterans 20 years ago, and now every last one of them is gone.
I may well live to see the last World War II veteran die.  Somehow that is intolerably sad.
