A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: June 22, 2008, 11:35:08 PM »

I know many of you have hobbies other than bad movies, and hobbies take up space.  As I have commented on here before, my passion is Indian relic collecting.  I have over 100 frames on the wall in my "den of Antiquity", assembled over 30 years of collecting and countless miles of walking.  Here are some pictures I took last week after I cleaned the glass on all my cases.

So what does your hobby room look like?

You know there is a fine line between hobby and addition ... just FYI.

Well I'll have to take pictures at some point. I don't have a hobby room I have a hobby building, we had a guest house and since I don't like guest (i.e in-laws) I converted it to a "man space" you know TV, Stereo, Beer fridge, lock only I have the key too, but currently since I'm remodeling AGAIN it's predominately storage since I had to move stuff out of the way to add on AGAIN. See the down side of being a contractor is that your spouse always fines "improvement" that need to be done.

It's goes like this ...
Wife: Wouldn't a sun room look nice right here?
Me: No.
Wife: I think it would, can you build it?
Me: No.
Wife: I guess I'll have to hire someone.
Me: No.
Wife: Well when are you going to start?
Me: ....
Wife: Well?
Me: .....
Wife: I'll go pick out colors.
Me: (looking for a razor blade - mumbling 'colors' might want wait until it's built.)

So between trying to keep PAYING customers happy I'm building a damn sunroom in my FREE time, my SPARE time, you know when I'm suppose to be relaxing, which leads to all new outdoor lighting, which leads to larger 400 AMP electrical service, which leads to a auxiliary HVAC system, which leads to redoing the landscaping, which leads to extending the patio, which leads to a new trim color, which leads to re roofing the house, which leads to a bunch of other crap, which leads to me being broke, which leads to me drinking heavily. But hey I get a happy wife and God knows what that's worth.

This is why I have a man space ... out of sight, out of mind, no projects. I occasionally hear "Where's your Father?" or "Dad, Mom's looking for you!" I ignore it.

Smile Since I live in a small garden flat, I don't have the space for a hobby room, so I guess my bedroom where I have all my books, videos and electronic equipment would be that. I wish I could buy the house I live in ~ then there would be plenty space for a hobby room.  TeddyR

Lagomorphs: menace or underutilized resource?

« Reply #3 on: June 23, 2008, 10:27:57 AM »

Very cool space, indianasmith! I don't have a hobby space right now, though I do have very detailed plans for one I plan to build (saving money for it now). We also may be moving soon, so I have to wait to see where we will end up; I may get to have a room instead of building a shed. Of course, any hobby space in my household will have to include a lock to which only I have a key or else my wife and kid will end up taking it over.

Anyway, good job on the room! My brother (who is obsessed with finding arrowheads) would be very jealous.

I would love a hobby room, but I don't own the house I live in (I live with my parents still) so I don't have a say if I want a hobby room or not.  I would enjoy having a room just for watching movies and playing video games.  It would have no windows so no sunlight could come in and it would have to be big enough for all of the DVD's and such that I have.

We recently bought a house, and the extra bedroom above the garage is marked for the Badmovies.org office.  Get this:  the room was painted red, with black curtains, and red carpet (and I mean the reds were "bloody murder red").  I threatened my wife with sitting in that room in the middle of the night, chanting, "Red room!  Red room!" for hours, but the walls and ceiling have been repainted a calmer cream color that at least works with the red carpet.

Once we get moved in, I will take a picture or two.  It will be a few years before I worry about changing the carpet, and the walls.  I would like to do wood paneling in there.

You might want to look into car siding (some call it V-Grove siding) it sold at Lowe's but can be had much cheaper at a Lumber Yard. It's call car siding because it's what they lined box cars with. It looks 100X better than paneling (IMHO) and it's much thicker (1") so bonus is some insulation, sound proofing and it really beefs up the walls. One side has a V grove the other side is flat, I use the flat side for plantation flooring. It's tongue and grove and natural so you can stain/paint it any color you want.
Around here at Lowe's a 1X5X10 is about $12.00 at the lumber yard they're about $3.55 each.

Here a image it's large so just a link.

That does look good.  I should have clarified that I am probably not looking at wood paneling sheets, but rather making wood panels.  One of my uncles has a sawmill.  If I can find two trees, one an oak, the other a walnut, and get him to rough cut it for me, I can plane the wood and do the routing work.  It can be thin, because all I am looking for is a wall covering - I am not making cabinets.

I collect a lot of movie memorobilia but alas, its in boxes currently awaiting a room to display it in.  I used to have a good set up at my old place but now I just don't have the room.

I hear paneling I think 1970's and go .... WHY?

If you have access the a sawmill then yea, you're in business. 90%+ of my wood come from there. If he can do quarter sawn, that can be pretty. Walnut is a good looking wood but it is dark. I like the colors you can get from poplar and the richness of cherry. Who am I kidding I like all wood.

My hobby room is my office, where I work at the computer, display my toys, store some of my books, play Xbox, watch movies and generally collect dust.

Looking in my office from the hallway:

Then four shots of the room, each looking into a different corner. Note the 12-inch Pinhead figure for reference.

The place has a few more things since I took those photos, mostly new Godzilla figures, a lightsaber and a skull replica. All the DVD's and the other half of the books are in other rooms.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.
