Gilbert Gottfried has to be one of the most polarizing actor/comedians out there.



Most people either like him or totally hate him.  There is no in-between.
People that hate him...really hate him.  They can't stand his appearance, his voice, his mannerisms...everything about him.

Personally, I think he's hilarious!

He does crack me up. He seems to follow a certain bit of advice that says 'if the punchline isn't funny, scream it out'.

There was an episode of Hollywood Squares (the later one) he did where he bluffed the two contestants so much that it went through two commercial breaks with nobody but Gilbert Gottfried being asked the questions; the show was one of the funniest I have seen.

He will, unfortunately, run something into the ground as well.

I've sat through game shows and skits with him in them and been rolling in laughter; I don't know, though, if I could take something like a movie showcasing Gilbert Gottfried for a full 90 minutes. But, who knows?

I have really enjoyed the stand-up routines I've heard from him; they are some of the funniest I can recall from anyone. In movies, he's all right, but he seems to be one of those people who have to be doing their own thing to be really entertaining. In that respect, I'd compare him to Martin Mull, who is wonderful when allowed to do his own thing (Fernwood Tonight, The History of White People in America), but only passable when doing someone else's material (Roseanne). I'll agree with Menard that he can run things into the ground, but he usually can still keep it funny, at least longer than most.

I agree with that. It seems, though, that what movie roles he gets simply have a script entry along the lines of 'Gilbert gets annoying'. Where he can improvise or do his own stuff, he certainly leaves one rolling in the aisle. Too often, though, outside of his own stuff, they just want him to be annoying and abrasive; which he can certainly be.

I don't think he gets the credit he deserves. A lot of comedians are good at improvising on the moment, at least really good comedians are; look at Whose Line Is It Anyway for prime examples of that.

I would consider him along the ranks of Paul Lynde and Groucho Marx, both of whom were among the best improvisationalists. Gottfried can roll with any line, whether it is funny or not; and even if it's not funny, he still makes it appear to be.

The most annoying combination in comedy. Could it happen? Has it happened? Put Gilbert Gottfried and Pee Wee Herman together.

I find his jokes funny and his voice that sort of irritating form of funny (like Charo for example).  Overall, as a comedian I'd say he was *** 1/2 out of *****

Gilbert Gottfried is, in my opinion, an underrated genius as a comic/actor.  Love him in standup, and liked Problem Child 1&2.  PC3 was terrible, but eh. 

Then again, I've been told I have no taste.  But I've seen his standup from the '80s/early '90s.

Gilbert Godfried is so obnoxious that he's brilliant. If you've ever heard him talk with Penn Gillette on Free FM, you discover that he has an incredibly vast amount of comic knowledge and material. My brother and I never get tired of hanging around and listening to his stuff, never gets old

I'm a big fan. There was an episode of married with Children where the cruise ship Al and Peg were on sanl and they ended up marooned in a life raft with several people, including Gottfried, who played himself as the ship's entertainment. Imagine being stuck on a life raft  in the middle of the ocean with Gilbert Gottfried!. They really played up the aspect of being completely and relentlessly trapped wth such an annoying character and it was hilarious. I can still remember him trying to cheer people up by doing his Mickey Mouse imitation.
   He appeared one morning on a local news show pimping his appearence at a nearby comedy shop. he had the anchors rolling on the floor with his ad libs and he told a few dirty jokes that should probably have gotten him banned from appearing in public during daylight hours. It was great. I actually called work and told them I'd be about 15 minutes late so I could catch his entire bit.

I laughed quite a bit at Hugh Hefner's roast. Ice-T came up and said something like "I don't even know who Hugh Hefner is, I just came here to F some white B!@#hes". Later, Gilbert said the same joke, and it sounded so retarded it was funny, then of course, he ran it into the ground, , but it was still funny.

Edit: and as crude as he is, it's easy to forget that he voiced the parrot in Disney's Alladin. As kids movies go, it was OK, but Gilbert outdid Robin Williams IMO, or at least close to it.

I have to say Gilbert Gottfried makes me laugh.

As far as the Hugh Hefner roast, well his contribution has made it into legend because he performed an "aristocrats" joke, which they made into a movie. I recommend you watch the movie. It's not really that great, but it is funny. The amusing thing is, I saw that performed on Comedy Central, but it wasn't the joke that made me laugh. It was the joke immediately preceding it. I'm not going to repeat it, but the punchline was "I'm just fudking with you, she's dead!"

If you can, check out his CD "Dirty Jokes." It's an hour of his stand-up where he tells some really old dirty jokes. I had heard most of them, but Gottfried's delivery made them all the funnier. And this CD is as dirty as they come. I know you think you're jaded, but I think you will be surprised. I want to tell you the jokes, but I'm not going to, at least not here.

Actually, I'm one of those people that is indifferent Gilbert Gottfried. I don't hate him nor do I seek him out. At times he's funny and at times he's not. I can take him or leave him.

I'm a fan.  He's a great improviser, as was mentioned.  It's easy enough for me to get past the voice gimmick.   And to me his Bert Banner was the highlight of SAVED BY THE BELL: WEDDING IN VEGAS.

He was also involved as a writer at National Lampoon back in the day and had some very funny contributions.

While I do think he's a funny guy, I have to ask, why is this post under bad movies? There is a section under Bad Movies called "Other Topics" that has Television, Entertainment, etc.
