Many British users will be familiar with the "Video Nasty" scare, which occurred when the public became concerned about the lack of BBFC regulation for video tapes, leading to the Video Recordings Act 1984.  Even some of us Americans might be familiar with this moral panic, since many of these "nasty" films are only available uncut in the US.  Many of these films have been released under several different titles.

Here is a list of the so-called "Video Nasties":

Absurd
Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein
The Anthropophagus Beast
Axe
The Beast in Heat
- Better known to us Americans as SS Hell Camp.
The Beyond
Blood Bath
Blood Feast
- The oldest film on the list.
Blood Rites
Bloody Moon
The Bogey Man
The Burning
Cannibal Apocalypse
Cannibal Ferox
Cannibal Holocaust
- Arguably the nastiest of the "Video Nasties".
The Cannibal Man
Cannibal Terror
Contamination
Dead and Buried
Death Trap
Deep River Savages
Delirium
The Devil Hunter
Don’t Go in the House
Don’t Go in the Woods… Alone
Don’t Go Near the Park
Don’t Look in the Basement
The Driller Killer
The Evil Dead
Evilspeak
Expose
Faces of Death
Fight for Your Life
Forest of Fear
Frozen Scream
Funhouse
Gestapo’s Last Orgy
The House By the Cemetery
House on the Edge of the Park
Human Experiments
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
I Spit on Your Grave
Inferno
Island of Death
Killer Nun
The Last House on the Left
Late Night Trains
The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue
Love Camp 7
Madhouse
Mardi Gras Massacre
Night of the Bloody Apes
Night of the Demon
Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker
Nightmares in a Damaged Brain
Possession
Pranks
Prisoner of the Cannibal God
Revenge of the Bogey Man
The Slayer
Shogun Assassin
Snuff
SS Experiment Camp
Tenebrae
Terror Eyes
The Toolbox Murders
Unhinged
Visiting Hours
The Werewolf and the Yeti
The Witch Who Came from the Sea
Women Behind Bars
Xtro
Zombie Creeping Flesh
Zombie Flesh Eaters
Zombie Holocaust

Of these films:

35 have been released uncut in the UK

26 have been released cut in the UK

1 has been released with additional footage in the UK

12 are still banned in the UK to this day, because they have either been refused certificates on resubmission or have not been resubmitted for classification by any distributors.

How many of these films have you seen?

Ones I've seen,eh...
.ANDY WARHOL'S FRANKENSTIEN- I guess having sex with someones corpse  is pretty nasty, alright. Plus a little incest thread going on as well in that movie.
.ANTHROPOPHAGUS BEAST-I only saw the severly cut GRIM REAPER Wizard Video release...soo...I can't say much about it.
.the BEYOND-aka 7 DOORS of DEATH- I guess showing daylight threw a little girls head is gruesome...seen worse.
.BLOOD FEAST-HG Lewis....the fx were quite phoney....I like the flashback scenes!
.CANNIBAL APOCOLYPSE-Again...I've only seen the cut version...sooo...
.CANNIBAL FEROX-This movie cracked me up. What's with the one doper calling everyone a "c#nt"?  BounceGiggle
.DEAD and BURIED-I like this movie a lot. Underated! But a 'nasty'? Huh.
.DON"T LOOK in the BASEMENT-Wha...? I LOVE this movie! I view it as comedy!!!  BounceGiggle
.the EVIL DEAD-See above comment on DON'T LOOK...
.EVILSPEAK-Clint Howard banned! THAT'S evil!!! Clint with a bigh a$$ sword and hell pigs....that's not 'nasty'...tha'ts family fun for everyone!  Smile
.FACES of DEATH- Mostly phoney set pieces...the worst part for me was that poor monkey for dinner. Poor monkey!  Bluesad
.FROZEN SCREAM- the Hanging Woman is the only part of that movie I remeber....I saw it a long time ago on Showtime,I think,in about 1981 or 2.
.FUNHOUSE-Is fun. I like the monsters cool Frankenstein Mask!
.I SPIT On YOUR GRAVE- Yeah...this is nasty. The rape scene drags out waaaaaaaaaay to long then I thought nessacary.
.LIVING DEAD at MANCHESTER MORGUGE- I have a vhs tape of this simply titled the LIVING DEAD. It appears to be very cut...as in NO gore...very few zombies...boring as hell.
.LAST HOUSE on the LEFT-I like this movie...but for reasons other than some. I think the dialouge is very interesting. And Krug is a very evil basterd....
.MADHOUSE-Is this the one with Vincent Price and Peter Cushing?
.NIGHT of the BLOODY APES-HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!..oh--oh...I-I well...ha ha HA HAHAHAHA!  BounceGiggle BounceGiggle BounceGiggle BounceGiggle BounceGiggle BounceGiggle
.TENEBRAE-Argento. I like it. Don't understand the 'nasty' factor bestowed upon it.
.the TOOL BOX MURDERS-Yeah...this is pretty nasty. I like It alot. Cameron Mitchell is GREAT!!!  Cheers
.XTRO- This one confused me. Kinda dumb too.
.ZOMBI FLESH EATERS-Is'nt this one also known as ZOMBIE-the Fulci CLASSICK?
.ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST-Is this DR.BUTCHER MD? I LOVE this one! The boat motor...the eye gouging....good movie .

Curious though...The WEREWOLF nad the YETI...? Isn't that a Paul Naschy movie? If so...I'd like to see that one!

I can think of lots that SHOULD have made the list...like hummm...lessee...SEXETTE,XAUNADU,anything with Pauly Shore....

I haven't seen too many.

Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein
Blood Feast
- The oldest film on the list.
The Evil Dead
Love Camp 7
SS Experiment Camp

The Argento films are the only ones I haven't seen on the list that I plan to (oh, and XTRO, I think).

That "Video Nasty" label probably sold a few more units over here in the states than it would have otherwise.  Horror fans here were aware of the label, and it was actually a selling point.

Most of those movies are pretty bad, from what I can tell.  A few were classics, despite being extreme.  POSSESSION is the one that really sticks out as not belonging on such a list--even though I didn't enjoy it that much, it clearly had serious artistic value and was even nominated for a Golden Palm at Cannes.

Actually even alot of milder "R" rated films still have alot of scenes cut out of them over here. There's one scene in "Cobra" with Syvester Stallone where the Night Slasher (bad guy) sends the police some woman's hands, it's on my VHS copy and an early Region 1 DVD, but not on my later Region 2 disc version. I still don't think they even sell "Child's Play" over here, there was a big hoo-ha over that years ago when some babysitter got strangled.
I've seen all the extreme cannibal films though, in the major HMV stores - uncut too. All very confusing for gore-hounds like me  Question

I think that the "Child's Play" series was cited as an influence on the two boys who murdered Jamie Bulger, wasn't it? I seem to remember that causing a fresh (and I suppose understandable) scandal about violent movies/videos in the early to mid 1990's.

Yeah, that too. There was a few incidents and they just pinned the blame on as many horror films as possible.

In order to achieve total Nirvana, he also has to see Zombie Flesh Eaters. Wink

Blood Feast
The Evil Dead
Funhouse

Hmmm, surprisingly few for me, although I do know a few of the others by reputation. Do I get bonus points for owning a copy of Funhouse? Not that nasty, as slashers go, but the calf with the cleft palate stands out as something I haven't seen in a movie before or since.  TeddyR
