Let me start off by saying that I love this movie.
I almost put it in the Good Movies section, but because there are a lot of people who think this film is completely ridiculous, I put it here.
I hadn't seen Rhinestone in at least 10-15 years. So when I saw it available as an instant watch on Netflix, I added it to my queue and watched it on my Xbox 360.
This film is a riot!
Dolly Parton plays Jake, a country singer from Tennessee who works as a singer in a New York City country themed club called "Rhinestone".
Her boss, Freddie, wants her body...and to extend her contract for another 5 years.
She doesn't want any of that, so she makes a bet with him that she can take any joe schmoe off the street and turn him into a country singer in 2 weeks.
If she wins the bet, she'll be released from her contract and won't have to sleep with her boss.
They settle on Nick Martinelli, played by Sylvester Stallone. A wisecracking goofball cab driver who doesn't know the first thing about country music.
Jake takes him down to Tennessee to try and transform him into a great country singer.
Then she must bring him back to NYC, put him up onstage and have him perform in front of the regular crowd at the Rhinestone. This crowd is pretty rough, and they're known for verbally tearing country wannabe's apart and booing people off the stage.
If Stallone can win them over, Jake will win the bet.
In this clip, Stallone shows Dolly his singing skills after they first meet. He lives above a funeral parlor owned by his father.
What follows is sheer hilarity with Stallone as a big dumb fish out of water.
The filmmakers wanted to take two people who are totally different from one another and put them in a movie together. They succedded admirably! The casting of Stallone alongside Parton was pure genius.
They actually have great chemistry together onscreen and their witty remarks to one another are often very funny.
I laughed my ass off!
Especially when Stallone gets down to Tennessee and sings with the band for the first time. He's so terrible, the animals all run away!
And Stallone's singing... Well, I'll leave that for you to decide.
Stallone Performs
I never realized that this film was directed by the late Bob Clark who also directed A Christmas Story.
I really enjoyed this film and had a smile on my face the entire time I watched it.
This movie is so bad, it's good and I would definitely recommend it.
