I went into this movie with zero expectations . . . it was from Midnight Releasing, which is affiliated with Brain Damage Films - so you can understand why I would not expect anything from it.
Sure enough, one thing that became immediately apparent is that this thing had ZERO budget. Special effects were very limited, and the two scenes that featured CGI monsters were obviously cheap, worse even than most Sci-Fi Original movies effects.
Yet, at the same time, this film had an odd sort of charm, and at its best moments, really was reflective of Lovecraft's world view.
Quickie synopsis - a perky girl reporter is assigned a filler story for Halloween about legendary horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. As she begins to research his life and legacy, she discovers that many people believe the horror icon's mythos reflected an underlying reality of dark, demonic gods and cruel, ancient cults. Eventually, she learns too much, and realizes that "the stars are right" for the first time in 75 years . . . and a long-awaited gate is about to open.
The movie was a big long and draggy in spots, and hampered by its incredibly low budget, and despite the nekkid witch on the cover art, there was no nudity whatsoever in the film itself. Despite all this things, it was surprisingly watchable and had a nice little twist ending. Good to watch on a long rainy night if you have nothing better to do.
