That brings me to my question, what other movies have been made but are so ridiculously dark you can't tell what's going on through the majority of it.

Oddly this movie is so dark that its named: The Dark (1979)

There's a scene in The Final Terror where the kids are attacked on the bus, then they go running into the woods. Darryl Hannah's throat gets slashed and Rachel Ward's character sews it up, but it's so dark you really can't see whats going on.
