We're all just victims of circumstance

« on: June 14, 2009, 12:14:26 PM »

An alien named Kainan (Jim Caviezel) transporting a dangerous creature called a moorwen crashes his ship in a lake in Norway in 709AD.

The moorwen broke out causing the crash and is now loose in the world of the vikings.

When Kainen goes looking for the creature he comes upon a decimated village  and is captured by Wulfric (Jack Huston), a warrior from another village. When Kainen is questioned he says he is looking for a dragon.

Of course they don't believe him until the moorwen attacks.  The vikings led by King Rothgar (John Hurt) take Kainen along when they go to hunt for the moorwen.  In the process Kainen saves Rothgar from a large bear and quickly becomes friends with the vikings.

They still have doubts about the dragon until Gunnar (Ron Perlman), the leader of the previously destroyed village, shows up blaming Rothgar for the attack.

After a battle between the two factions the moorwen makes an appearance. This helps Kainen to forge an alliance with the two factions to work together to stop the beast.

I don't know what the deal was with this movie, it sat in the can for quite a while and was supposed to get a limited release.  Well now it's on DVD.

I have to say that it's at least as good as most of the blockbusters of the last few years and a helluva lot better than some.

The acting is good and Caviezel does a good job portraying the man who has lost everything because of a horrible deed he took part in.

The creature itself is rather unique and I have to say that Ron Perlman is sporting the coolest outfit he's had since Blade II

The cover art declares it as "Beowulf meets Predator".

Definitely entertaining.

I for one thought it was terrific fun. Maybe it was a bit too long, the way sometimes 00s films think they need to explain everything or add as many subplots as they can.

But the camerawork and the acting were very good, and the whole Dragonslayer + Beowulf + Predator stuff did the thing for me.

I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far~ ruminations
