(spoilers for the film)
Is it just me or does Romero seem to really NOT like the military in general of late ("of late" as in, his last couple of movies)? I mean, in The Crazies, there was at least a sympathetic military commander who was trying to do the best he could, stymied by a lack cooperation and information about the task at hand, and in Dawn Roger and Peter were SWAT team members (which, when you think about it, it's more logical that two guys with military/police training would survive something like this rather than two average nobodies.)
But then we get Day and find pretty much all remaining military guys are a***oles to various degrees, but we could say that's mainly due to years (a decade?) of frustration, isolation, and breakdown of society of general.
Another thought: Okay, I buy the idea of some National Guardsmen going rouge and decided, "Hey screw this, lets rob some citizens and make off on our own." but why in the WORLD would they be firing off their guns and hollering like rednecks as they drive away? Wouldn't they be, oh, I don't know, conserving their AMMO? Not to mention with all that noise, they're doing a good job of giving away their position to any zombies that might be roaming around.
Just thought that was over the top ridiculous.
Course, I guess we could speculate that they were REAL National Guardsmen, that they just found/stole the uniforms and playing a role (similar to a the cops on the harbor in the original Dawn of the Dead, although you kind have to watch the director's cut or read the trivia to figure that out), but somehow I doubt it.
