Hand tries to take over the world?

I remember watching a movie about five years ago; all I remember is that its about a hand trying to take over the world. I think at one point the person's hand tries to cut itself off from its owners arm.. I'm sorry, but I'm short on details. Any help is appreciated.

I owned this once in the 80's=most bizzare! I'll bet you a dollar this is the film of which you speak! (That sounds really geeky,don't it? It should.....I'm a geek.)

I have read the short story, it's by Clive Barker. Don't remember the name though :( and didn't know it was made into a movie.

I remember "Quicksilver Highway," and believe that it might be a good fit.  Of all things, I have "Demonoid" in my collection, but have never watched the VHS. 

The big question is when the OP saw the film, and what time period fits the best.  "Demonoid" is 1981, while "Quicksilver Highway" was 1997.
