BBC News is reporting the passing of the great British actor Edward Woodward, star of The Equalizer, Callan and The Wicker Man.

RIP, Mr Woodward and thank you.  Bluesad

This really sucks.  He was one of my favorite actors and from all accounts a very nice and humble person.

He was great in Hot Fuzz. I wasn't aware he had a role in it until I was in the theater and when he showed up on screen I blurted out "Ed Woodward!" with a big smile on my face.

His performance in The Wicker Man is one for the ages.

I loved Woodward in the Equalizer, he proved that old guys can still kick ass. He was great in Wicker Man and Breaker Morant.

Used to love The Equalizer.  Kind of scary to think I was watching that show 20 years ago.  I was very young to be watching it, I must say.  I remember thinking the intro was great.

I didn't even recognize him in Hot Fuzz.  Cool to know that was him.  A very nice role for him.

RIP.

R.I.P. Mr. Woodward. We've lost yet another talented actor. Thanks for the memories.

EDWARD WOODWARD was hugely talented, a sensitive, accomplished actor, and always a treat to see in anything.  I was also a fan of "The Equalizer" because of WOODWARD's fantastic characterization.  Good night EDWARD, your work stands the test of time.

I can truly say that Mr Woodward was truly a nice guy ~ despite all the bad-ass enforcers he played like Callan and Robert McCall (some people say that these two are actually the same character) ~ because I wrote him a fan letter years back, asking his thoughts on Breaker Morant and he replied to me. I'll bet he even typed the letter himself.  Smile

I'm writing a review of Hot Fuzz for this site ~ I loved the film and the review will be dedicated to him.  Smile

Typical Robert McCall line:

[Addressing a bad guy] "You have five seconds to give me the name." [pause] "Time's up! Throw him out of the window!"

Another of my favourites gone.  So very sad.  Good night, Edward.

I just had an idea ~ I have to come up with the titles for our yearly film screenings in Bloemfontein. As Breaker Morant is a film about South Africa and its' release date is within the time frame we're covering, I'm going to put that title forward for 2010 both as a film people would like to see and as a tribute to Edward Woodward.  Smile

Errrmmmm...... I just discovered that the archives only has a Betamax tape of the film....... Buggedout

Director Edgar Wright (of Hot Fuzz) has quite a well spoken eulogy about Mr. Woodward that is well worth a look.

Thanks for that, Torgo.  Smile

And Edgar is right ~ the Hot Fuzz DVD commentary with Edward Woodward, Timothy Dalton, Paul Freeman and Kenneth Cranham is great.

Hi Trevor,
I appreciate the depth of your thoughtfulness.  My own gut tells me, BREAKER MORANT, though an important and challenging film, a masterpiece really, is perhaps too challenging anyway....  Bluesad  That film is a heartbreaker, a showstopper, and a challenger.   Thumbup

I recently saw The Wicker Man for the first time but didn't realize that it was the same guy from The Equalizer.  I used to watch that show with my parents when I was little.  The intro to that show always stuck with me.  It's sad to see him go.
