Like the poll asks, what's your favourite type of Metal? I definitely pick plain old heavy metal, thrash, death, doom and glam. You?

I put in for Groove Metal.  If I can headbang and/or dance to it that makes for perfect music to me.

Coming in a close second is Glam/Hair Metal.  I grew up in the 80s and that stuff, as long as it was done right, is comfort food to me.  The more sleazy the song the better.

I'd say for me there is a tie between Industrial and Thrash for the last spot.  I dig NIN, Fear Factory and Prong but of course I can't ignore how much I enjoy stuff like Testament, Sepultura, Slayer, Antrhax etc.

Plain old Heavy Metal, with Hair Metal a close second.

I don't know what the rest of those are  TeddyR

I can't answer this, because I don't like metal.  Wink

But while I have you metalhead's ears, maybe you can suggest something I might like.  What I don't like about metal, really, is the vocals.  It all seems to be either screeching or that silly "Cookie Monster" growl.  And don't get me started on the lyrics; I just can't relate to them.

But I can tolerate the metal instrumental sound, and I even like it sometimes.  I like Boris (which sounds more experimental to me), and some of King Crimson's heavy explorations (like THRAK).  I also can get into some of the heavier math-rock bands like Don Caballero, which sounds very metal-ish to me.

So, are there any metal bands that are either purely or mostly instrumental that anyone can recommend to me?

Almost picked heavy, but went with glam metal. Hair bands all the way.

I'm a wham, bam glam metal man!  TongueOut I know it ain't the best metal genre, it comes close, but I would die for it and have many times over...

But, the best really, is good 'ol bog standard heavy metal. That's where all these other sub-standard sub-genres sprouted off from. Head banging, fist pumping, riff tastic, balls to the wall heavy metal. Stick with your Defenders Of The Faith, Denim & Leather, Holy Diver and you'll never go wrong.  Wink

Well you're looking at people like Jason Becker, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Tony McAlpine and a bit of Symphony X.

These are my favourite instrumental tracks Rev:

And of course, Overkill's cover of the Edgar Winter Group classic:

Melodic death metal, thrash, power, and progressive for me.  I guess I'm kind of a dork like that.   TongueOut

My fiancee says the power metal I listen to sounds like theme music for Saturday morning cartoons from the 80's.

I voted for heavy, doom , sludge and grind. For heavy metal, I love the classics (Maiden, Preist, Accept), for doom I like The Obsessed, Paradise Lost, Candlemass, for sludge I like Eyehategod and Grief, and for grind I really like early Napalm Death and Agoraphobic Nosebleed. I think powerviolence should've been included - then I'd give a nod to Man Is The Bastard and Apartment 213.

I can't stand much metal, but I like some Iron Maiden, a bit of Neurosis, Mastodon's pretty good, er, maybe Tool if they can be considered metal.  I used to be into Amorphis, and I bought an Opeth album once (zzz...).  I dunno, it's an area of music I haven't really explored and I'm in no hurry to.
