Based loosely around Osamu Tezuka's own comic and around the original film itself, I just had to see this one.  I just recently bought and I'm going to be watching for an upcoming review because from my understanding it is very criminially underrated and not well known.  That and it is suppose to be very good.  For those who have seen it, what do you have to say about it?  Is it good on its own, is it as good as the silent film, and is it possibly even better?

I wouldn't say it's very good, but it certainly is well made.  The first few minutes are my favourite parts, but anyways.

I loved the silent film, and this comes across more as inspired by rather than remaking the original, so I consider them to be two different entities.  As such it pales in comparison but is certainly worth a look.  Tezuka has such a good style to his drawing and they really run with it in this movie, even adding CGI to parts to fill it out.

I enjoyed it overall, and own it, but it seems like it skirts greatness, and I feel like there was something missing that would make it a truly great film, though I'm at a loss to make a suggestion as to what it could be.

Much as I hate to disagree with Dean, I think Metropolis is a great film.

I watched it in actual theater with an audience that was completely into the film. It was one of the finest movie-watching experiences of my life.

So I think Metropolis is one fine example of a great movie. I loved it from start to finish. The set to Ray Charles finale is one of the greatest things I have ever seen.

Metropolis is great, and if you like anime you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Tezuka's Metropolis, and I tend to watch it at least once a year, but thematically it left me wanting more, but I always tend to get a little silly when robots and humans are involved, and tend to want to explore those ideas much more than I got in this one.  Again these are probably just me unfairly comparing the original Silent Film with an anime based on a manga adaptation inspired by the original movie!

Pretty much everything involving the Ziggarut is awesome visually as well.  We need to build more of them in my city...

Incidentally the DVD I have of Metropolis has a pretty interesting behind the scenes documentary, and an interview with Katsuhiro Otomo, who is always good to hear from.

Tezuka's Metropolis is one of those movies that's so bad I can't comprehend how anyone could possibly like it.  There is not one thing, nothing at all, that I liked about this movie.  I believe my life is worse for having seen it.

Hmm... explain why you say it is that bad.

I too saw this in the theater, and as a fan of Rintaro I really enjoyed it. Some of the city scenes with crowds were especially nicely animated, and it is one of those few films that blend the CGI scenes with the traditional hand drawn cels very well. The story is nothing that awe inspiring, but as mentioned before the original silent film is a big standard to live up to.

Like I said, I didn't like a single thing about it.  Had my girlfriend allowed me to, I wouldn't even have finished watching it.

Looking it up on IMDB, I see it was directed by Rintaro.  I've seen four of his movies (X, Doomed Megalopolis, Metropolis, Dagger of Kamui) and hated them all.  Well, I didn't hate Dagger of Kamui but I certainly didn't like it.

Amusingly enough, the original manga was based off the movie poster and not the movie itself.  Osamu just saw the poster and didn't see the movie so his story is mostly completely different.  The movie had elements from both stories according to my research into it.
