*Sigh* I brought this film up back in November if I recall correctly when I saw the trailer and now here it is.  Within a 2 week period, we've had two films cashing in on the Twilight crowds; this film and Beastly.  Sadly... from what I've been hearing and seeing, Beastly is the superior film so far.  This film currently holds at 11% on Rotten Tomatoes and that's never a good thing.  It is the worst film to come out this year coughBigMomma:LikeFatherLikeSoncough, but that's still pretty bad.

So, anyone care to see the movie and report back on what you thought?  Its got Gary Oldman in it!

Here's a review to tide everyone else over: http://my.spill.com/profiles/blogs/red-riding-hood-audio-review

After watching a couple of trailers, and reading some reviews of the movie, why does it remind me of an older movie I've seen before?? Hmmm. oh ya.. Now I remember!.. The Company of Wolves.

So, there's a werewolf in this one, plus a bunch of star-crossed lovers and a lot of blood. I seem to recall the original fairy tale being a lot simpler.
Oh well, I prefer this adaptation. :D

Well, I find Amanda Seyfried to be meltingly hot, but that doesn't mean she makes movies I'd like to watch. In fact, most of the movies she makes I have not desire to see.

I even sat through Beastly and I won't go see this one.  Not even for free.

Well, guess who saw it.

What was wrong with it?
It needed a better script, but more than that . . .

It needed a better director, but as I understand the director of this also directed "Twilight," which I didn't know when I saw the film, but would go to explain alot of what was wrong with the film.

What was so-so?
The acting which was all over the board, except for one performance, which we'll get to later.

The cinematography. Some of it was good, but some of it didn't do what it was suppose to do.

The climatic fight scene. It was good, but should have been longer.

What was right? A lot of little moments, even if they were mostly minor, but first . . .
Gary Oldman. There are some actors who do not need a good script and a good director to turn in a good performance. This time it was Oldman. (IMHO) He turned the whole film around with his performance.

Julie Christie. Anybody remember her as Lara in "Doctor Zhivago?" She's been in films for almost fifty years. Longer than most of us have been alive. I do love the old pros.

The costumes were nice. The locations were nice. The sets were nice.

The soldier climbing up the inside wall of the tower. That was a nice moment.

The two soldiers removing their helmets to reveal the fact that they were Moors. That was another nice moment.

The explanation of who the werewolf was. That was nice.

How the ending of the fairy tale was incorporated into the film. That was nice.

That it was not R-rated. Like I expected it to be. That was nice.

All the films referenced by this film. The fairy tale feel of the film was "The Company of Wolves." The mood of the film was "Witchfinder General." The story was "Silver Bullet." And it looked alot like "Brotherhood of the Wolf."

Conclusion
There was enough nice moments in it for me, that they overcame the bad moments, and I liked it. But, I certainly can understand people's hatred of the film.

The trailer looked like COMPANY OF WOLVES, but as imagined by not-very-bright 13-year old girl.

I'm sure I'll catch it at some point on Netflix. I don't expect it to be much, but I've got a celebrity crush on Amanda Seyfried, so sooner or later...

Finished watching it.  It's okay, that's all it is.  There is certianly good techincal aspects to it, like the sets and costumes.  Heck, the wolf looked pretty good.  The soundtrack was decent and I loved Gary Oldman just hamming it up.  Also, I liked the mystery aspect of wanting to figure out who the wolf was and it elevated the movie a bit.  It made the movie so much better.  On the bad side of things, most of the other acting was pretty forgettable and the romance was quite boring.  There's also silly and sometimes crowbarred in lines that just make me laugh.

So, I would have to give it a 2 or 2.5 out of 5.  Not godawful like people were making it out to be, but nothing special or worth really seeing unless you see it for free.  At least I now have a movie I say that I've seen that I don't like this year (despite me constantly bringing it up as one of the worsts of the year, I did not see Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son.).
