Anyone seen it? I think you either hate or love this movie, I loved it (though I'm unsure about the ending), but the other ten people in the theatre seemed to have hated it.

I loved it too.  I'm surprised you sensed so many people in the theater hated it.  I think lots of people would hate it, but they're probably not going to show up to the theater for an art movie like this anyway.

Yeah, well like I said there were only 10 other people in the room, who seemingly all hated it. Since they were mostly women I assume they were a bunch of Brad Pitt fans for just his looks. Although Brad Pitt's performance was one of his best in this movie, I guess it wasn't interesting enough for them.

I want to see it. I loved badlands and Days of Heaven. Heaven is an absolutely gorgeous movie. You could watch it with the sound off and still be entranced by the photography.

I really liked Badlands and Days of Heaven as well, the New World not as much but it was still very decent. Still need to see the Thin Red Line, and I'm looking forward to his new project, even though it stars Ben Affleck.

It's definitely not for everybody but that said I quite enjoyed it.

The perception for this film is that it thrives on its complexity, but I found the subtext quite simplistic.

"Simple" and "simplistic" are two different things.  I don't think the religious symbolism is hard to notice or get, but I wouldn't call it "simplistic."  I thought a lot about the meanings of various images during the film; my mind was envigorated as I watched it.  That's one of the things I look for in an art film.
