Steve McQueen vs. Kevin Dillon.  Can there possibly be ANY comparison here?  Take away the modern special effects from the '88 version and what's left?  Not much.

ven if the effect were poor, I stil found more momentum in the '88 version.

The Original. Cuz I'm a big fan of 50's sci-fi and of Bad movies-this is both....
Oh-and there's even a reference to Bela!

I liked the remake a lot, the original was cool too. Can't really decide which one I like better, though. They're both very different from each other. Makes me yearn for the days when remakes actually tried....

I've always viewed the 1958 and 1988 versions of The Blob like the original & 1978 versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. They each in a way act as both remakes as well as sequels so that you can own both and not feel like they're just duplicating each other.

I'm also a huge fan of the remake. It's totally brutal and it was the first 'super-gory' horror movie I was exposed. It definitely contributed to my slow descent into becoming a total gore hound

The only thing I remember about the remake is that it featured Erika Eleniak.  Is this a good enough reason to prefer the remake?

I like'em both, but for different reasons. The '58 version is pretty much everything that's awesome about '50s drive in flicks in a nutshell (i.e. the square jawed teen hero, the police officers who don't believe the kids till it's too late, etc.) ... and you don't get much more iconic than that movie theatre scene.

I saw the '88 version in a theatre and it was a load of fun. I will never forget towards the end of the movie when the government has arrived in town, they've welded all the manhole covers shut and the guy in charge sez something about how it's now "contained." Of course, two seconds later the ground starts shaking, the street cracks open and this humongous, p**sed off Tower of Blob comes pouring out of the hole, a guy somewhere in the theatre yelled out, "Yeah, RIGHT, motherf###er! Contain THAT!"  TeddyR

That's the only part of the original I really like.  It's all downhill after that opening theme.

I like both but I will lean towards the remake.  The reason is for the better affects.  I can't wait till the 2012 remake to see how far they can go.

Later,

John

I wanna see the original. I own the 88 version and to tell you truth it kind of sucks, and not in the way I would like it too.
