Brought to you by Studio Ghibli, this film features magical racoon testicles! Yeah....
Moving on, this is a film about a community of magical shapeshifting raccoons, aka Tanuki, that struggle to prevent their forest home from being destroyed by urban development. One of our members here, not to name names, accused Nausica, made by the same company, of being a preachy enivornmental film. If we are to accuse Studio Ghibli of producing a very preachy environmental film, I think we need to set our sights on this film. Holy crap is this preachy (trust me, if the ending narration didn't convince you of that, I would accuse you of being deaf) and pretty damn depressing to boot. I'm not going to get too much into the details of why, because it is something to be seen.
While the movie is not really bad per say, the environmental message will easily annoy people who tend to find this sort of message frustrating. Also, I don't think this movie is up to the quality that the studio usually puts out. It just doesn't sit with me well, but hey, if you liked it, you liked it.
For those of you who have seen it, what do you think? Good film, bad film, preachy film, a combination of the above?
