I thought this would be interesting after the Academy Awards taking place yesterday. The only rule would be that the winner can only be replaced from another movie that was nominated.

1940 - The Great Dictator/The Grapes of Wrath over Rebecca
1941 - Citizen Kane over How Green Was My Valley
1944 - Double Indemnity over Going My Way
1946 - It's a Wonderful Life over The Best Years Of Ours Lives
1947 - Miracle on 34th Street over Gentleman's Agreement
1948 - The Treasure of the Sierra Madre over Hamlet
1950 - Sunset Blvd. over All About Eve
1951 - A Street Car Named Desire over An American in Paris
1952 - High Noon over The Greatest Show on Earth
1957 - Witness for the Prosecution over Bridge on the River Kwai
1961 - Judgment at Nuremberg over West Side Story
1964 - Dr. Strangelove over My Fair Lady
1967 - Guess Who's Coming to Dinner over In the Heat of the Night
1971 - A Clockwork Orange over The French Connection
1975 - Barry Lyndon/Jaws over One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
1977 - Star Wars over Annie Hall
1979 - Apocalypse Now over Kramer vs. Kramer
1980 - The Elephant Man over Ordinary People
1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark over Chariots of Fire
1990 - Goodfellas over Dances with Wolves
1994 - Pulp Fiction over Forrest Gump
1996 - Fargo over The English Patient
1997 - L.A. Confidential over Titanic
1998 - Life Is Beautiful over Shakespeare in Love
1999 - The Green Mile over American Beauty
2002 - Gangs of New York over Chicago
2003 - Mystic River over The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2005 - Brokeback Mountain over Crash

I'll only list the ones where I feel I've seen enough of the nominees to make a choice...

1939 - Mr. Smith Goes To Washington over Gone With the Wind
1941 - The Maltese Falcon over How Green Was My Valley
1946 - It's A Wonderful Life over The Best Years Of Our Lives
1947 - The Bishop's Wife over Gentleman's Agreement
1952 - The Quiet Man over The Greatest Show On Earth
1964 - Dr. Strangelove over My Fair Lady
1976 - Taxi Driver over Rocky
1979 - Apocalypse Now over Kramer vs. Kramer
1980 - The Elephant Man over Ordinary People
1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark over Chariots of Fire
1989 - Born on the Fourth of July over Driving Miss Daisy
1990 - Awakenings over Dances With Wolves
1996 - Fargo over The English Patient
1997 - L.A. Confidential over Titanic
1998 - The Thin Red Line over Shakespeare in Love
2005 - Good Night, and Good Luck over Crash
2009 - District 9 over The Hurt Locker

Winners I'd leave unchanged:

All Quiet on the Western Front
Grand Hotel
Casablanca
Going My Way
The Lost Weekend
From Here to Eternity
On the Waterfront
Ben-Hur
The Apartment
In the Heat of the Night
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Platoon
Rain Man
Forrest Gump
Gladiator

The other years I don't feel I've seen enough to make a pick...

2004 - Mystic River over Return of the King.  Not to say Mystic River was amazing, just thought it better than ROTK (which won due to what it is, rather than in its actual quality)
2002 - In The Bedroom over A Beautiful Mind
1998 - ANY other nominee over Titanic - guess I'd pick LA Confidential as the top
1997 - Fargo over English Patient
1995 - Pulp Fiction over Forrest Gump
1983 - ET over Gandhi
