I AM serious, and stop calling me Shirley

Short version: 4 out 5.

See this movie.  It's quirky, laugh-out-loud funny and has stick-to-your-ribs staying power.

It's not for everyone, but it is low budget, first time indie film making on a high level.

More Detail:

I have recently subjected myself to a round of horrible, truly HORRIBLE, romantic "comedies" in the last couple of weeks.  KISSING JESSICA STEIN (2001) was disappointing, SPRING BREAKERS (2012) (not strictly a romantic comedy, but had to be mentioned) was absolutely vomit inducing (I did resist, but only the dulling of six+ shots of Red Breast made that possible), HANNAH HAS A HO-PHASE (2012)  was quirky but failed to really impress (though the Leslie character arc was interesting) and LOW FIDELITY (2011) was down right annoying from the very first line...really could not stand this movie AT ALL.

FINDING BLISS (2009) was ok but mostly forgettable.

Only two of the recent viewing list stand out as "watchable" or better: FOUR FACED LIAR (2010) had some likable characters and last night's NEW LOW (2013).

A decent review can be seen here:  http://www.examiner.com/article/sundance-2010-review-new-low

And another: http://variety.com/2010/film/reviews/new-low-1117941996/

Plot synopsis: Wedell is a loser...with women and in life.  Well, he seems to do okay with women, actually.  He meets a sarcastic, downright mean bartender that steals his heart, but to paraphrase a well-known saying, be careful what you "do" with crazy.  He also develops an interest in heart-of-gold Joanna, a volunteer and activist for every cause under the sun.  Who to choose?  Which will accept him as who he is?

A lot of folks are not going to like NEW LOW because the production values are that of a low budget, non-produced production.  But for that subset of movie buffs that choose to look beyond the polish of a film, to focus on what is there vs what is not there, NEW LOW is a special treat.

If you liked the visual / storytelling style of CLERKS, give NEW LOW a look.  (I liked CLERKS okay, but I'm not a fanboy...it's just the closest well known film of this 'style' I could offer for example).

I hope to see more from Adam Bowers, but I hope he does not lose his edge if he ever gets mainstream.

Bodie:      I've been giving myself shock treatments.
Professor Hathaway: Up the voltage.
