Only a few surprises.

Biggest snub was THE MASTER being passed over for Best Picture and Best Director. Second biggest snub: Ben Affleck didn't get nominated for Best Director.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK was not bad, but seven major nominations is crazy. Most people thought only Jennifer Lawrence was a sure thing going in. Still, happy to see DeNiro acknowledged, even though he doesn't have a shot.

Jacki Weaver for Best Supporting Actress in SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK is ridiculous. Ann Dowd should have been nominated for COMPLIANCE.

HOLY MOTORS being snubbed for best foreign film is sad but predictable. AMOUR being nominated for Best Picture is a surprise.

Best Documentary category is broken this year with THIS IS NOT A FILM and QUEEN OF VERSAILLES missing.

I was holding out hope that CABIN IN THE WOODS would get nominated for something, but that was foolish, I guess.

I really do need to see LINCOLN and THE MASTER.

MOONRISE KINGDOM getting absolutely nothing annoys the hell out of me.
EDIT:  Apparently it got one for screenplay, I missed that the first reading.  Still annoyed.

Waltz is a powerhouse, but if they were only going to give out one acting nom for DJANGO it should have gone to DiCaprio.  (Also, I'm not sure Schultz is even technically a supporting role.)

I'm not surprised McConaughey didn't get nominated for KILLER JOE, but it's still not right.

OK, I haven't seen SLP so maybe this isn't fair, but I am really having a hard time swallowing that one.

I hope PARANORMAN wins best Animated & Wallis wins Best Lead Actress, even though I'm fairly certain they won't.

I like the visual effect category; those are all good choices.

I don't have the heart to watch Roger Deakins lose again.

As usual, I have yet to see a single thing that was nominated.  

That said, I do wanna see some of them, like "Argo," "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Wreck It Ralph," I just haven't gotten to any of 'em yet.

Nope, DKR got shut out.  And yeah, the Nolanites are freaking.  (I'm okay with that personally; I enjoyed it but it was by far the weakest in the trilogy.)

You should definitely see ARGO,  all the noms in the Animated category are good too.  I also really loved DJANGO UNCHAINED but that one depends on how much you like Tarantino.

Who's getting the Thalberg this year?  Have they announced that yet?  I didn't see it in the article.

Humor's a highly subjective thing, I guess.  I found it poundingly smug and tedious and a definitive "cool concept, s**t execution" experience.

For me it was hands down the best picture of 2012, so that is reflected in what I think it should've been nominted and won for in some cases.

Ok so DKR is just a stupid comic book movie, there's nothing wrong with that but that's not the kind of movie that the Oscar's needs to recognize. The Dark Knight was arguably a smart comic book movie and that didn't need recognition either. Also the script for DKR was atrocious and the idea of that getting a nomination is pure insanity.

I am somewhat surprised that The Master didn't get a Best Pic or Best Director nomination but am happy that it's actors got nominations. I have seen no better performances this year than Phoenix, Adams, and Hoffman and would not be disappointing in the slightest if they all won.

Django was a surprise for me in best pic, as although i completely loved it, it does not strike me as the kind of film that would get Oscar recognition. The fact that Tarantino and Bigelow did not receive best director nominations suggests that neither Django or Zero will win best picture.

Although admittedly I have not seen Amour yet I feel that this is the year for Haneke. With nominations in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign, it is clear the academy loves this film and would not be surprised to see it make a sweep this year. Considering Haneke's career of making extremely intelligent and daring films I would not be disappointing in the least if he walked away with several statues.

Surprised by Flight getting 2 nominations, although I enjoyed the film mostly and loved Denzel's performance I thought that it was not quite strong enough to deserve award recognition.

Enjoyed Argo immensely but don't think it will win anything. Arkin was great fun, but in comparison to what Hoffman and Waltz brought to their supporting performances I don't see a comparison.

Also I hope Prometheus win's in visual effects as I thought it looked absolutely AMAZING in 3d.   

In a perfect world Killer Joe deserves nominations down the line but it is far too challenging for the Academy at this time. But how awesome would it be too see Friedkin receiving a second Best Director award 40! years after winning for The French Connection.

Film's I cant comment on due to not seeing them include Beasts, Lincoln, Silver Linings, Life of Pi, and Les Mis. Can't say I'm particularly interested in seeing any of these but I guess I will eventually catch them.
I am going to see Zero Dark, and Amour very shortly and will update my thoughts once I see those two.

Ah Oscar season, this is like my Superbowl!

I'm not surprised McConaughey didn't get nominated for KILLER JOE, but it's still not right.

I'm not surprised by it either, or of Cabin in the Woods [wasn't it released in 2011 meaning it missed out on last year's noms?] but its still a shame.  I imagine the highlights reel for Killer Joe wouldn't have been eligible to air since all his good work is mind-bending batcrap crazy in that film.

Given the hype I'm surprised Argo didn't net Affleck a best director nod, but I sadly haven't seen it yet so can't specifically judge it.

Overall I'm surprised that Silver Linings Playbook got so many nominations: was it really that good?

Glad Quvenzhané Wallis got a nod.  Not surprised DKR didn't get really anything since The Dark Night didn't really get much either and it was a superior film to DKR.  One day a comic book movie will get there...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is not your personal fanboy validation vehicle. 

They are looking at 'films' a completely different way than most viewers.  In fact, it is a rare year indeed that I have even seen most Oscar contenders except in the animated category (and this year is no different).  I have not seen one single one of the "Best of the Year" nominations, but that does not mean I have not enjoyed the dickens out of the movies I HAVE chosen to see.  I don't take it as an affront that "The Academy" looked elsewhere for academic achievements in the technical aspects of film making.

The People's Choice and MTV Awards are more "pop" recognition for movies audiences "like."

CiTW had a playdate in LA or NY in 2012 which makes it eligible. It was eligible for the Online Film Critics Award, where it got the nom it deserved, Best Original Screenplay. It didn't get the win but don't blame me.

Not really. It's to date movies what DKR was to superhero movies. I think everyone was shocked it got so many noms.
