He was part of the dynamic duo that ran/owned Cannon Films. His output speaks for itself. Here are some highlights (for me) from his long and varied resume.

Death Wish II (1982)
Hospital Massacre (1982)
Revenge of the Ninja (1983)
Ninja III: The Domination (1984)
Exterminator 2 (1984)
Missing in Action (1984)
Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo (1984)
Missing in Action 2: The Beginning (1985)
Nine Deaths of the Ninja (1985)
Lifeforce (1985)
Invasion U.S.A. (1985)
Death Wish 3 (1985)
The Delta Force (1986)
America 3000 (1986)

He helped produce some horribly cheesy, but usually fun, movies in the early part of the 1980s.

He directed one of my favorite disasters:

Small | Large

He co-produced Tobe Hooper's amazing LIFEFORCE.

His company, Golan-Globus, distributed the arthouse fantasy THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, which is one of my favorite overlooked movies:

Small | Large

I've got to thank him for 3 films that enriched my life, if nothing else.

RIP Menahem Golan.

"The basic plot is that Donna Speir and Hope Marie Carlton, the two undercover DEA agent Playboy Playmates from the last movie, are still running around in jungle shorts, cowboy boots and spaghetti strap T-shirts, firing their machine guns at drug smugglers, Filipino communist guerrillas, and corrupt federal agents while their two friends, Lisa London and Miss May 1984 Patty Duffek, lounge around the pool a lot and talk on speaker phones that look like fax machines."-Joe Bob on SAVAGE BEACH

Considering his wonky track record in South Africa's film industry - not paying his casts or crew, etc - and my non-cruel nature, I don't quite know what to think or say here.

I used to say I live my life a quarter mile at a time and I think that's why we were brothers - because you did too. No matter where you are, whether it's a quarter mile away or half way across the world, you'll always be with me. And you'll always be my brother.

That's a bummer. I was in high school during Cannon's mid 80s glory years and if you were in the video store looking for cheap thrills, you  usually couldn't go wrong with anything that had a Cannon logo on it.

Coincidentally, my sons and I had just finished watching Cannon's silly-but-fun "Indiana Jones" knock-off, "King Solomon's Mines" with Richard Chamberlain on the night I heard the news about Mr. Golan.

I saw a couple of the "Missing in Action" and "Death Wish" sequels in theaters back in the day as well. To this day, whenever I see the Cannon logo at the start of a movie, I get a warm fuzzy nostalgic feeling.

Thanks for the B-Movie memories, sir.

He made movies his way: boldly, baldly, and badly, but the movie world would be a lesser place without them.

R.I.P. Menahem. You will be missed.

R.I.P. There's a lot of fun 80s greatness on that list above.
