Is the existence of an afterlife necessarily predicated upon the existence of God, though? There may be no one at the helm of the universe and the energy within our consciousness might survive. Energy changes form but it doesn't cease to be. The notion that we are biological beings and nothing else has a lot going for it and to me contains equal parts horror and peace, but I truly think there are reasons to intuit and even logically hope for some post-death continuation.

And thank you guys, each and every one, for all your thoughts here. If I didn't give you karma for taking the time to reply, then I meant to.

As I've grown older,  I feel that death is simply LIGHTS OUT.  There is no reincarnation or afterlife.   We come from nothing and we end up as nothing...much like the flowers or vegetables we grow in our gardens.  They live and die and we accept the cycle of life.  We want so badly to believe that there is an afterlife but I don't think so.
Do you remember what life was like before you were born?  Neither do I.  Death is eternal oblivion of which we are blissfully unaware.

From star dust back to star dust....but who really knows? Is the end but another beginning?

I personally think it's a transformation into a new form and a reuniting with those who have gone before us.
...
I hope that is so.

I'd like to believe there's something post-mortem.  But who knows, really.  I mean, I believe in ghosts.  But I kinda believe that once we die, we're dead and that's it.  Having something to believe in gives us some kinda happiness in the thought, I guess.

I don't know.  I hope I'm proven wrong.
