I AM THE BAD PHOTOSHOP EFFECT!

« on: September 19, 2015, 01:39:22 PM »

These really became more of a thing with the Marvel movies.  But with more studios trying to create their  own cinematic universes, I'm thinking we'll probably start seeing them more and more. But they were around before the MCU.

Occasionally, they seem to end a plot point in the film, but usually they were used to leave the door open for sequels.

There are movies I didn't even know had stingers, like I just found out the House on Haunted Hill remake had one.  Its a scene that I could see not really fitting into the proper narrative of the film-but that's not always the case.

I do like some of them.  It's a similar feeling to seeing a little Easter Egg in a film.  And some of them do add to the film, but they need a break form the main plot or don't really fit  elsewhere.

So what do you think?  Are movie stingers a sometimes necessary part of a film, a nice little treat, or a cheap way to keep you watching the whole film?

I'm not really a fan of them.  I've been sitting on my can for 2 hours or longer, and I want to get up and pee/refill popcorn/leave.  But I did like this one in particular:

I thought  they were pretty cute in the early '80s, when cable was first getting started.
My favorite one at the being the end of The Muppet Movie.

I like it when they put them on short films.

The reason I started watching end credits all the way was to see the original year of make or when the film was produced. Most of the time they would differ from the year printed on the VHS cover. That way I would get to see post credit scenes occasionally, which to me was always a nice treat or reward.

Like anything in life, appropriateness is key. If they suit then great, if there's no point then why not have it earlier in the film.

I tend to wait through most credits anyway [when it comes to movies I enjoy at least] so the waiting isn't an issue.

The Avengers second stinger was excellent. Great throwback for a last laugh. But there have been some shockers.

Really though you have to give it to Marvel for changing the paradigm on what we expect from our movies, especially superhero blockbusters.

I remember Grumpy Old Men they had one where Walter Matthau said if he had known there was a nude scene in the film he would have asked for another million.
