You're correct, John, historically there were twelve tribes of Jews in ancient times and even today some claim Jewish surnames might mark families as being descended from a particular tribe (names that sound like Levi or Lev, for instance are said to hearken back to the priestly Levite tribe/class) but a colloquialism among (modern US?) Jews is to refer to their fellow Jewish people as "the tribe." I've heard it so often it's long since stuck with me and I use the expression too.

I refer to Catholics as "my tribe".  I was born and raised to it.  The Catholics are mine.

I thought you were Catholic, sans religion, in a tribal sense.  Irish, anyway.  Maybe the mean nuns you've remembered were Anglican?

That great Irish Catholic (a deathbed convert) Oscar Wilde, whom I consistently prayed out of Purgatory in chapel in thirteen LONG years of Catholic school----ya owe me, Hoskar!  ---told us that "to define is to limit," but you're not far off the mark with your summation. I have Irish citizenship, most of my family lives there, and I was raised Catholic, though if religion is the outer expression of internal beliefs, I am not sure I can claim to be a Roman Catholic, I just take my daughter to Mass each Sunday because she wants to go, so....conclude from that what you can, lol.

I Jews a happy "Hah-nuh-kuh"  for two reasons.

I. I never hear a jew vowing to force his religion on me. I never hear a jew writing a guide to forcing people to surrender to their religion or be murdered. That puts them above the other main religions in america.

2. I gotta love them for the enemies. Anyone hated by muslims, nazis and KKK members has to be doing something good.
