A group of Flat Earthers accidentally prove the Earth is round in an awkward moment from documentary Behind The Curve. At the end of the documentary, from 2018 but now streaming on Netflix, Jeran Campanella, who co-hosts a flat-earther YouTube channel, conducted an experiment with a torch. He explains in the film that: ‘Deep down inside, I think everybody knows that [the Earth] is flat’ during a Flat Earth International Conference in 2017. He explains an experiment to prove his flat earth theory which includes aiming a laser at three posts of the same height spaced out equally. When the laser is shone from the first post then the other two can be used to measure its height. An accurate measurement wasn’t possible in the first attempt, to Campanella has another idea. The experiment involved shining a torch through two holes onto a camera (Picture: Delta-V Productions) The second experiment involved shining a light through holes cut into two pieces of styrofoam at the same height. Campanella claimed that the light should be able to be seen on a camera positioned behind the second hole, proving that the Earth is flat. However, if the light needs to be raised to a different height as the holes to be seen on the camera, then it indicates the Earth’s curvature and proves the Earth isn’t flat.
Trying the experiment, Campanella notices that the light doesn’t shine on the camera at the other end of the two holes and asks for the light to be raised. ‘Lift up your light way above your head,’ he says. When the light is raised and appears on the camera, he comments: ‘Interesting. That’s interesting’ just as the film ends. Incredible.
