What horror films would you consider "artsy"-you know what I mean. When they start out to be art. I could even argue the CABIENT OF DR. CALIGARI is an art film. I would think Jean Rollins' films would count.

I reckon it depends on what you consider artsy.
I wouldn't consider the CHANGLING artsy. I mean, it's got George C. Scott.

I would say any movie by the Kuchar Brothers is some terrifying s**t- and I don't mean in a good way by any means whatsoever!
These guys are f**ked up!
They did THUNDERCRACK! (1975)!

But it's art! Because these guys were not out to be famous.

Jump right in, Rev-because you know more about this subject than anyone here!

Most of my favorite horror movies qualify.

Definitely CALIGARI, no question about it. It was all about bringing the Expressionist art movement to movies.

NOSFERATU. HAXAN.

Rollin tries to be arty.

Polanski's horror movies. Panos Cosmatos' movies.

Lars von Trier's ANTICHRIST.

CEMETERY MAN.

THE COMPANY OF WOLVES.

DEMENTIA [DAUGHTER OF HORROR].

EYES WITHOUT A FACE.

HOUR OF THE WOLF (Ingmar Bergman's horror movie).

Jodorowsky's SANTA SANGRE.

THE VVITCH.

A lot of movies I don't consider horror but others do (A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, ERASERHEAD).

I would agree on all off those!
I would also say PSYCHED BY THE 4-D WITCH.
It's real bad art-but it's art.
Call me weird, but I love it.

DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS (1975) and (dare I say?) GLEN OR GLENDA? (1953) -yah- I know it's not a horror film-but it horrified me!

The Incubus. A B&W horror film so obscure i don;t know if it's been mentioned here. Basically an artsy horror film unique for being filmd in esperanto (Sounds just like spanish to me) and starring william shatner. It also used music from the outer limits. Too artsy for me.

If your tastes in horror run towards the purely human evil variety, "the visit" is something of a horror film with artsy pretentious style. The horror of it is in how an entire village ignored a man's crime against a young woman, and how quickly it was to see him punished when they were offered big money to do it.
