ALIEN and CHINATOWN I would replace one or two of mine... in fact I intended to include CHINATOWN.  I think STAR WARS (1977) is a lot of fun, and very important, but compared to those two alone it pales.
I think LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972) is very important.  I hate it.

This is real hard- I really should replace something with ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1975) or FIVE EASY PIECES (1970).

Here's where ya lost me :

...
4) Beneath the Planet Of the Apes(1970)
...
6) Tombs Of the Blind Dead(1972)
7) Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde(1971)
...
10) Westworld(1973)

I saw BENEATH just a few months ago.  It's really silly; no comparison to the first.  Out of all of them, I like that one least (though it has its moments).

TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD is fun but not that good.  It's a painful memory because I criticized the film at the old SciFi forum and got thrown off!   Lookingup

SISTER HYDE?   BounceGiggle  Definitely a GREAT example of a '70s movie!

I just watched some of WESTWORLD on TCM.  Man that is implausible to say the least.  Thumbup   TeddyR

honorable mentions: The Exorcist (1973), Barry Lyndon (1975), Apocalypse Now (1979), Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)

so in the spirit of every other decade of film thread having 20 as the minimum, for the most part, I'm expanding my list to 20

11 The Exorcist (1973)
12 Barry Lyndon (1975)
13 Apocalypse Now (1979)
14 Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)
15 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
16 The Omen (1976)
17 The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)
18 The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
19 Rocky (1976)
20 The French Connection (1971)
